not sure if i’m missing something here, but pic in pic has border settings if all you are looking for is a white frame.

setup you shot in frame flex, and add a pic in pic effect.

It is…it wasn’t supposed to be, but i had a laptop sitting around, and an mxo2 sitting around, and i needed to start a streaming session…1 thing led to another and…

In the end, the software itself was pretty cheap, is easy to use, and does allow me to embed the stream into my website, so i can point clients to an offshoot of the website, and it all looks pretty internal to them.

  • you need cuda acceleration for it to run. If you spec out a laptop, make sure of that. I have an HP Zseries laptop and it runs fine, but some of the models only have built in hp graphics, not nvidia, so beware. you also need 1920 x 1080 min. resolution. a 13 inch laptop won’t work. You may find it cheaper to build a desktop and put an nvidia card in it. Check the resolve specs on their website. (there are different specs for windows vs Mac)

Take a look at UStream. I use it for remote sessions with clients. You do need some extra hardware, and yes, I upped to a 3-5 MB upload speed.

My setup is a laptop with an MXO2 box taking a feed from my edit box.
The MXO2 does a lot of the heavy lifting for the streaming side of things. Within the Ustream software, you pick your video source to stream, and one of the options is to run a desktop stream. This is another piece of software that needs to run on your edit system. Once everything was hooked up, I got very good results from a fps standpoint. You can adjust your stream settings to help out with slower internet hookups. You also have the ability to do live switching from your sources. (edit output to desktop) Trying to run the ustream software on your edit box will probably prove to be too much while you are editing, hense the use of a laptop and mxo2 for that task.

The only issue is the time delay. I’ve experience between 5 and 15 second delays. This delay is nothing the client will notice, as they are watching a very smooth stream, but if they say “stop, go back to that last shot”, it will appear to them that it takes you about 15 seconds to hit stop. I usually explain the situation to them upfront, and put a timecode burn up for ease of explaining what they are looking at. I also monitor the stream on a tablet so I can apprx. guess where/when they are in time.

All in all, I’ve had some very successful client reviews with the system, especially with client groups that cant all physically get together at the same time.

Are you saying it allowed you to make a new timeline, cut four individual sequences into that blank timeline, but won’t let you do anything else to that time line?

Are you perhaps looking at the source side sequence? (is the little
double monitor icon in the bottom left of your timeline green?)

If you load up a sequence in the source side, then yes it is read only, but the record side should be fine, unless you’ve locked some of your tracks

  • Really, you can set this up many different ways.

Most people around here would say set you gamma to Red Log Film, and use Red Color 3. This will give you a flatter starting place. There is nothing “wrong” with starting with the camera settings, except you may find it difficult to bring back some of the detail in the blacks or whites, if the camera settings are a bit extreme. It will at least show you what the director saw on set…if that helps or matters.

You don’t “need” to add a lut either. If you don’t know how to use one, or why to use one, or which one to use, then don’t even play with that tab.

Also check your image cropping/scaling on input setting, to make sure you are seeing all the picture you want to see. Again, goes back to how the director was monitoring on set. If the shots were all framed for 16×9, then you may want to adjust your input scaling. If you are going to be letterboxing the whole show later, you may want some different settings to allow you more flexability.

April 30, 2014 at 2:02 pm in reply to: Scaling 5K question

Rohit, i’ve set up my presets, and they work on a shot by shot basis, but i can’t get it to work with all the media in the pool.

I went into a project, went to scaling, and created a preset called 5k to 2k 16_9 (.5 zoom)
I then opened a new project, checked “Override input scaling” and selected 5k to HD preset.
Set my input scaling to centre crop no zoom.

I now load my footage, and place on timeline. I still have to go into each shots scaling atributes and tell it to use the project settings…which work, but i was hoping to have it automatically applied when i brought in the footage.

Am I misunderstanding the order of some of these settings?

  • Mpeg stream clip will have lost your timecode…or at least set every clips timecode to to 0:00, so if you are conforming based on timecode, Resolve is going to see every clip starting at the same timecode, and ending at different timecodes, so it is going to get confused very quickly. You are probably going to have to do some conflict management, or manual assigning of clips to media.
