I find renaming clips from file or date based numbers to a meaningful name in the Events Browser works quite well.

At first I was disappointed to find no Log & Capture/Transfer in FCP X, as my workflow is HDV tape based. I continued to used FCP7 for ingest. Then I decided to try Import from Camera, and added another drive to hold Camera Archives. Now upon import, I create a Camera Archive of the tape. Then I select Import From Archive, and skim through the clips to decide which will make the cut. The Camera Archive clips appear in a window as thumbnails which can be skimmed and played for review.

Once imported, clips populate the Event Browser. Here is where I rename my clips to something meaningful rather than the date the clips were imported or some other file number. To make selects, I then skim and play the clips, marking In and Out points as Favourites. Keywords are then applied to the Favourite clips in the Event Browser.

While it might seem like an extra step, and the cost of a drive for Camera Archives, it seems to me that this workflow is faster.

FCP X does have a Timecode Generator, which is customizable. Go to Generators > Elements > Timecode. When you apply it, the Timecode Generator will sit on top of your clip like a title. The default is 10 seconds, but you can extend it by dragging it from the start of the clip to the end. Tiimecode Generator in FCP X includes a Label field. In the Inspector, go to the Generator tab. You can select Format – HMSF, HMS and Frames. The Timecode Base is also selectable – Current Project, or 24, 25, 29.97, 30, 50, 60 and so on. And there is the Label field where you can enter clip information for your client or producer. Font face, size, font colour and background colour are selectable. Once you have set up your clip with the Timecode Generator the way you like it, merely Export Media as per your usual workflow.

For what it is worth, the term “kerning” denoted the adjustment of space between individual characters. “Tracking” is the spacing of a group of letters. From my experience this has worked since day one in FCP X.

Yes, it would be nice to have.

Perhaps Kerning will be implemented in a future release, and this is just a place holder. There is nothing on Kerning in the latest User Guide for FCP X 10.0.3.

Here’s a nice new feature – Media Relink:

Reconnect media and exchange files with third-party applications using a robust relink interface. Select media that has been moved or modified, or locate clips that have been transcoded, trimmed, or color graded by third-party tools. Then easily relink to your Final Cut Pro X project or Event.

Thanks, Ben. That’s here I tried to make the name changes. Fortunately I was able to change back to the original names here as well. The Import Camera Archive retained the original file names, so I was able to copy them.
