I can’t remember if we’ve disucssed this here. I did a quick search and didn’t find anything.

I create media for a producer to use for logging interviews and tapes.

In the past, I shot on tape and would create dvds. They could then add notes on their script “tape 2 @ 45:55”

These days, I don’t shoot 42 minute tapes, but individual clips. Often hundreds of individual clips.

I’ve used FCP7 and a free app called “FInal Cut Pro Clip Labeler”. This and the timecode reader in FCP7 lets me export clips with timecode burn of the clip name and the tc. This is very important since I’m not using time of day timecode, and all of my clips start at 0:00:00.

Now the producer can add the note “clip 89 @ 1:45”

I’ve created dvds. I’ve created quicktime movies, often combining b-roll into longer clips to reduce the number of quicktime files for the producer.

Am I missing something? What are some of your workflows for this?

FCP X does have a Timecode Generator, which is customizable. Go to Generators > Elements > Timecode. When you apply it, the Timecode Generator will sit on top of your clip like a title. The default is 10 seconds, but you can extend it by dragging it from the start of the clip to the end. Tiimecode Generator in FCP X includes a Label field. In the Inspector, go to the Generator tab. You can select Format – HMSF, HMS and Frames. The Timecode Base is also selectable – Current Project, or 24, 25, 29.97, 30, 50, 60 and so on. And there is the Label field where you can enter clip information for your client or producer. Font face, size, font colour and background colour are selectable. Once you have set up your clip with the Timecode Generator the way you like it, merely Export Media as per your usual workflow.
