    Hello.
I think I am missing something here. I made some search on the forum and bought and read a good “how to” guide, but I could not find a solution so far. I can’t find a way to give custom names to clips at capture, something like “John Doe interview-rollA-01”. I found I can apply a custom naming to the clips after capture, but it seems this won’t affect the original files. If I apply a “show in the Finder” command to a renamed clip, it will point to a FCPX style named file like “2012-02-17 13:11:45”. I could not even find something like the old “rename file to match clip”. I am sure there must be a way I can’t find.
    Thank you

    Fabio.

It’s generally a horrible idea to rename actual media files because that file is often tied to the original media folder generates one of zillions of unique names. If you really want to this then you should do it before you import.

    Use a utility software like:

    “A better finder rename”

This lets you rename everything you want at the finder level. Once you have renamed the clips then they will carry that name when you bring them into FCP X.

    Thank you David.
The problem, however, is not with files imported from external or internal drives, as if I already “logged and transferred” or “logged and captured” them with FPC7 I already gave them a meaningful name before actually capturing, so the media file is named in a way I like from the moment of its creation. The problem is if I want to log and transfer from a card a file whose name on the card is file001 or such, naming it with something unique and meaningful so that it’s created with the name I’ve chosen. I used to be able to do it with all the editing system I used in the past, FCP7 included. If I slip a card into the reader and choose “import” I can’t find a way of doing so. FCPX will take care of that and name the clips with “2012.etc”. This way I can not catch a media file content outside of FCPX. If I have three cams covering an event, I’ll get file names that will now and then overlap and get confused if they are created with “2012-etc” and not “Cooking contest-interviews-rollA-clip 01”. The only way I have to be able to identify them outside FPCX seems to create an event for each roll. Renaming them (the media files, not the clips) after the capture would not be a great choice for many reasons, but for my workflow it would still be better than a numbers only naming. It seems so strange to me that this feature is not included that I am sure I am overlooking something, so that somewhere, possibly in the preferences or in some buried panel one can choose to use a different naming style for the media files like the inspector allows you to do for the clips.
    Regards
    Fabrizio

The good news is that you can still use FCP7 for logging and transferring. I often do.

I also use Clipwrap for rewrapping.

Finally, I frequently use A Better Finder Rename for renaming my media with useful names.

I log and transfer, rename, then re-import. Not a bad workflow.

Someday we will be able do this all in FCPX, but at least we can still do it.

I find renaming clips from file or date based numbers to a meaningful name in the Events Browser works quite well.

At first I was disappointed to find no Log & Capture/Transfer in FCP X, as my workflow is HDV tape based. I continued to used FCP7 for ingest. Then I decided to try Import from Camera, and added another drive to hold Camera Archives. Now upon import, I create a Camera Archive of the tape. Then I select Import From Archive, and skim through the clips to decide which will make the cut. The Camera Archive clips appear in a window as thumbnails which can be skimmed and played for review.

Once imported, clips populate the Event Browser. Here is where I rename my clips to something meaningful rather than the date the clips were imported or some other file number. To make selects, I then skim and play the clips, marking In and Out points as Favourites. Keywords are then applied to the Favourite clips in the Event Browser.

While it might seem like an extra step, and the cost of a drive for Camera Archives, it seems to me that this workflow is faster.

Thank you. So I gather it’s not a hidden feature, but really a missing one. This will help not loosing my self esteem about not being able to find it 🙂 I’ll then keep on logging and transferring in FCP7, and importing later in FCPX. Renaming in the event browser will not change the media file name. Maybe getting used with searching for files within FCPX profiting on its great data organizing, then using the “reveal in the Finder” command will eventually turn into a maybe more efficient way to work when looking for video files for use in different applications than just searching in the Finder checking the file names.

This is also something that I’ve been looking for. I have dozens of drives with hundreds of projects…. all catalogued and searchable in the Finder or via CDFinder [NeoFinder].

Previously, with ingest via Log and Transfer, every clip would get a new name with job number, location, and content. Finder info already has the created date, so I don’t really want that to be the default filename.

Rename clip in Finder would be nice – some option to rename on ingest would be nicer. For now, it’s the ol’ Log and Transfer I guess.

I know this thread is 3 years old….but has this changed at all? This is exactly what I’m trying to do now! I’d love to rename on capture so the .mov file has the name I want
