start with custim sift for finding clips etc, if you want to get cleverer there’s always media manager.
One tip though, if you always prefix camera rolls when your loading,
x4 as opposed to 4 for instance, you’ll find you can distinguish between differant project material within you media folders at windows level… -
yep, been there! Cant’t say I recognise the exact message but odds on it can’t translate something to an edl form, or its confused with dupes or handles for a mix or b roll.
workaround…
try pulling an edl for each track seperately till you can attribute the error to a certain track.
Then, pull a cuts only edl, if this works then, cut the sequence in half and pull a full blown edl, fx and all, if this fails then the error lies within this segment, repeat until you find what segment of the sequence is creating the problem, strip the fx in this area and paper log them!
basic but hopefully effective…

depending on the comp[lexity of the project, an omf, medialess if necessary, or audio only would be a cool way to go.
Make two omfs.
1. audio only with embedded audio (consolidate first in fcp if necessary), or if the audio is complete you could just mix it down to a stereo pair and blow it out as a simple two track omf.2. vision omf with no embedded media.
than you can batch into mc.
Edls are fairly limited, vision fx are restricted to smpte based wipes and dissolves, and only a limited number of vision tracks, so you may have to export and import multiple edls.
The edl manager is an option when you install mc…
If you have some spare dollars then the automatic duck will sort it, but omf or edl manager should do the trick.

Mail back if you have probs with the edl, there are some pitfalls…eg. the edl setting at the import end need to to match those at the export end…

March 23, 2006 at 9:01 pm in reply to: Am I the only one who thinks compositing/FX in Media Composer is just insanely stupid?I find word processing insanely difficult within photoshop, that’s why I use Word!
Sure, it’s frustrating, to a point, though historicaly I believe avid entered the market as a non-linear off line system to replace tape based off line suites, and succeeded in revolutionising the way editors and post production works.
The industry has however changed, there is less specialisation, and people expect their nle and operator to replace the whole spectrum of post.
Strangely I read far more complaints about Avids lack of compositing/fx features than I do about its rather basic audio toolset, (I don’t think the concept of stereo has actually been addressed yet),
Sure transfer modes would be cool, though they are available in plug in form (you may find they exist to a point already within media composers/symphony if you look hard enough so the code mst be there somewhere)Although it has its weaknesses it remains a solid professional nle, I only hope the hal/smoke/combustion/ds/ae etc forums are continualy recieving posts saying how insanely clumsy these machines are to edit on!

on-line is difficult, try any facility house, they probably have a pile of old ones, or mail if you have a specific question.

As suggested, the attic files don’t immiediately appear to be bin files, but they will open as bins if you move them to aother location, though you don’t actually have to change the extension, just select the show all files option and open them from within a project.

March 20, 2006 at 11:32 am in reply to: Avid titling vs FCP (Adrenaline with Studio Toolkit)I leave ae renders working in the bkd whilst i cut within avid. Imports and exports are easy, you can use avid codecs to blow out of ae, once you’ve done it once you can save your settings within ae and always use the same template, importing back to avid is drag and drop, the advantage of ae is aprt from just tiles you can use it for allsorts, comping/file transfers/3d etc etc.

sort of…
with either cc or col effect, desat, crush and add some lumincance, most easily done with curves, then dupe the aley, add some blur, and use the transfer plug in and use the add or scree function.

Not sure, but most nle overide the vts preroll settings, but…
to adjust preroll on the deck,
look at vt composite character out (the output with the tc display)
press menu on the beta frontpanel, or under the flap, this should display a menu on the monitor, you then use the jog wheel to scroll through the munu, preroll is probably item one, to adjust hold down the jog button whilst rotating the jog wheel to adjst the setting, then release and press the set button.you probably need a preroll of 5 secs or more for a sp beta to lock, though 5 secs is probably the default on the beta.
Again, if you printing to tape the transport setting are sent over 422 to the deck overiding most internal settings so try adjusting preroll in you fcp dect configuration first.
