Meanwhile, I am particularly interested in how this codec appears to be a great one size fits all solution. It scales from SD to HD and with the open timeline, this will make a great post codec for any source.

You should be fine except for Color, which requires more horsepower and a larger screen so, keep that in mind. I can tell you that Motion will be lackluster on that system but, it will ‘work’.

How much are you charging your clients? If it takes you very long to make up $500 you may consider changing your rates or choosing a different area of business.

Ok, I was under the impression that we were talking about a 3D file and not 2D. Yes, Illustrator will open most versions of .dwg files so you should be fine.

Do you know what CAD program they are using? I have taken ProE animations into AE without a problem in the past. It can render a QT movie os I requested it rendered in the Animation codec and it worked well. However, my experience was that they were not near the quality of a 3D rendering like Maya or 3DS. Just to set expectations 🙂

The question is if Prores422 will be cross-platform. With FC server being cross-platform I am hoping this will be the case for the new codec as well.

[Peterd] “truth of the matter is FCP is the one apps that was really designed from the ground up by Apple”
Actually, Macromedia originated FCP and Apple bought it from them. THe only apps in FCS that Apple originated was STP and Motion.

[rcPics] “Think about this, too. What would it take to pony up and ‘steal away’ some of the big post houses in Hollywood or what have you that have already invested decades and millions of dollars in their way of doing things? How long would that transition take, and can only a few at first act as a catalyst for everyone else?”
In case you haven’t noticed, it’s already happening. Even Avid sees that now:
“”At NAB 2007, Avid is demonstrating offline and online workflows with third-party applications running on an Avid Unity MediaNetwork 5.0 system. These demonstrations will include Final Cut Pro and Adobe Production Studio systems accessing and editing the same content in real-time; and a color-grading workflow utilizing Symphony

[CharlieX] “STOP MAKING SEPARATE APPLICATIONS TO HANDLE DIFFERENT VIDEO PROCEDURES”
This is the future of video post – separate tools that integrate together to create a common outcome. The power of this is that it makes the workflow so much easier to expand and grow. It is much easier to turn over the different aspects of a post project to either another person or another computer. Now with Final Cut Server, this will be even better.
It’s the future – either embrace it or fight it – it won’t change the reality.

[Winston A. Cely] “I think we a another year at least before they redesign the case. I know it wasn’t a total redesign, but it was fairly recently (when they moved to the Xeon) that they added more ports to the front, dual optical drive space, less fans, and more hard drive space on the inside. Though I know it’s happened before, I’d hate for them to redesign the case and loose any of those features just because the basic design is old. For me, they’d have to at least keep all of those major improvements before I’d ever be satisfied with a case redesign.”
Personally, I think the current design is really good and I am glad they have just refined the G5 case.
[Winston A. Cely] “BTW I thought I remember reading somewhere that the design of these octo-core processors would be close enough in design to the existing quad-core that you could, in theory, replace the quad with the octo. Anyone read that, or was that just a dream?”
Nope, it’s been done and is easy to do (relatively speaking). They just swap in – no other changes required. This is really not a big deal for Apple – just a different part number.
