  • CAD file conversion?

Posted by Brian Tetamore on April 16, 2007 at 4:34 pm

Got a client that I’m going to create a simple 2D/3D animation of their new machine. It is currently sitting on an engineer’s computer in CAD format. I’m aware that CAD can export as Tiff files.

Does anyone have any experience or suggestions that might be helpful? It would be great if they could export as a layered PSD file. The plan is to use After Effects and finish on FCP.

I’m waiting for an answer back from the engineer on what he can do. He doesn’t seem to be extremely knowledge on transferring to a format that I could use.

    thanks guys/gals

Do you know what CAD program they are using? I have taken ProE animations into AE without a problem in the past. It can render a QT movie os I requested it rendered in the Animation codec and it worked well. However, my experience was that they were not near the quality of a 3D rendering like Maya or 3DS. Just to set expectations 🙂

Thanks for the input. Yeah, AE isn’t the ideal, but it is the client’s budget point.

By the way, I did some more research and discovered that you can import CAD (.dwg) files DIRECTLY INTO ILLUSTRATOR!!!

I can’t believe I just didn’t try it for the heck of it sooner.

Ahh, learning humility is a virtue.

    Thanks

Ok, I was under the impression that we were talking about a 3D file and not 2D. Yes, Illustrator will open most versions of .dwg files so you should be fine.
