Thanks. I realized that after I posted. One more question though…
Looking in the BMD options under AVI, I am seeing a “BMD HD 8bit 4:2:2 codec” and a “BMD 8 bit Mjpeg” codec. Which one is the “Online Jpeg” they refer to as an HD option?

I agree. I do appreciate that Adobe is focused on making things work together more smoothly and consistently. As I have looked over the feature sets in these new tools it occured to me that you really have to look at it as a super tool rather than a bunch of different apps. This concept is most likely the future of post production. The single uber tool idea is just too clunky and heavy to deal with now. Aple has been going this way since the introduction of FCS and Adobe is right there now as well. I would have enjoyed a revamp to the approach to 3D in AE in this release but, the integration is a more important direction.
Still waiting for someone to challenge the Flame compositor on the desktop but, I guess Discreet/Autodesk is still safe for another year. We’ll see what Apple has up it’s sleeve.

You will probably need to just recompress it using whatever tools you have available then. Just make sure you get the translation correct in terms of fields, rates ,etc. AE will do it but it will be slow and I think one of the compression tools will do a better job.

If you have a Blackmagic card, it can capture directly to whatever codec you like in real-time via the HD-SDI input. If you are looking for a software-based option then you are looking at some kind of compression suite or even AE will do it but, it’s not ideal.

Not sure that Shake is the ‘right’ answer to your question. Sure it will integrate with FCP via QT files but, if you simply want to put a 3D logo on the front of a video, just render it to a QT movie in the right format and import it into your FCP project.

Actually, I think bus-powered portable drives have a lot of merit as I use them myself. However, I use them for project files such as templates, PSD files, etc. For media storage they are not ideal and most likely dangerous for a project. eSata is really a great solution for inexpensive media storage and the portable FW drives are great for project files and random stuf you don’t want clogging up your precious internal space on a laptop.
I just look forward to having sizeable internal storage in my MBP.

I am not aware of a book or article that is mac specific because it is generally something that passes via forums like this. The first question to ask in order to really get good suggestions is your intended purpose for the station. What type of work will it be used for? The type of storage, memory requirements, video cards, etc all depend on this answer. In general, most will recommend a Mac Pro with at least 2 gigs of ram and a couple of 500gig sata drives internally. Beyond that we need to know more info.
I will warn you about one thing. Now is a difficult time for doing AE work on the new macs. AE 7 will run on them but it is not native and therefore runs slower than you would like and is sometimes fragile in some operations. Adobe will have a native version by this ummer (in which we will all celebrate) but until then your alternatives are to use Motion or to get a Windows license and use it via Bootcamp.

BTW
Our good friends G-Tech have a very nice little bus-powered raid you might like:

You should be ‘ok’ with a fw800 bus-powered enclosure for HDV but that also depends on your approach to HDV workflow. I have even seen two FW800 2.5″ striped together for very decent performance. Barefeats did a small write up on this. Of course, your major limitation is the size of the available 2.5″ drives and the cost/gig.

Do you already have FW800 drives? If not, I recommend you skip FW800 and just go Sata. Better expansion, performance and future options.
