Time displacement I believe.
Mattrunks has a tutorial that shows you that exact technique:

April 28, 2014 at 1:29 pm in reply to: same AE expression on two properties, working erratically (to me!)Remove the easing from the keyframes and see if that fixes it for you.
PS – when dealing with shape layers, make sure to specify “scale property” rather than size. Size is a different parameter within parametric shape layers. Was irrelevant in this case especially since you included a screenshot, but just wanted to mention that.

There is a way to fake it, but it has some limitations. You can only push it so far before it starts to fall apart. This is a still image technique, so you would want to apply it to a freeze frame. Here’s the basic, but there are a lot of tutorials out there with different tips for getting it to work well.

Did you try using the smoother? Window>Smoother. Highlight all the keyframes and apply. It will knock down the amount of keyframes.

As Todd said, you linked to a photoshop tutorial, but my guess is that you want to animate the source text property. Set a keyframe for each letter removal.

What Darby said. I didn’t specify, but you should be using the subtract mode for all of those masks.

April 25, 2014 at 6:14 pm in reply to: Animating a train: trailing, expressions and positioning problemGotchya.
Can you just remove the null object from the equation and apply the animation directly to the leading train? If you can do that, then your expression should work provided you have the time delay correct.

The problem is your ramp. You don’t need it either. Just make a solid above everything that is black or blue or whatever you want your night color to be. Set it to multiply and adjust your opacity so that the parts that you want to look the darkest is to your liking. Now create multiples masks on that solid and use the feathering on each mask to create the gradient glow of the window.
There are a bunch of ways of doing this though, that is just the closest to what you’re already doing.

April 25, 2014 at 1:28 pm in reply to: Animating a train: trailing, expressions and positioning problemSince you’re leading car is referencing a null object the position and anchor point are relative (not sure if that’s the best explanation, but basically, ya that’s what happens). Why don’t you just place the second car where you want it in relation to the leading car and parent it to either the null or the leading car?
