September 15, 2010 at 12:29 am in reply to: AJA HD10AM for the Ki Pro

    Hello Guys..

Although the AJA – is a 4-channel Analog audio em-bedder, it has
the ability to embed on channels 1-4 or 5-8 of a HD-SDI stream..

we use 2 – embedders – and set the first one to 1-4 and the
second to 5-8 and the editors love the fact that we have a stereo mix along with 6 – ISO tracks – with the line cut – all in sync on the timeline.

July 4, 2010 at 2:44 pm in reply to: Varicam 3700 firmware for 4:4:4 on P2HD?

    Happy 4th to everyone.

We have multiple 3700’s and have always hoped for an on-board
solution for 4:4:4 recording. This would require the use of the
Panasonic AVC-ULTRA codec that seems to be stalled for some reason.
And we were told it will not be possible to upgrade the 3700 to
handle this. (I suspect it would be a 4700…. IMHO! )

We are using the 3700 for green screen – due to it’s 4:4:4 capability. For the last six months we have been working with Cinedeck and are now dealers for this product. It provides on-board recoding of 4:2:2 and 4:4:4 using the Cineform codec at various bit rates, including a special Cineform Key-Scan codec – optimized for effects work. Price is a fraction of other options such as the Codex digital or OB-1.

AVID-HD DNX to be incorporated very soon.. as well as 3-D capability.

The recorder is also very close to becoming ARRI-RAW certified.

The recorder also functions as a viewfinder, with a ZOOM feature
that is great for checking back-focus. Record media is SSD drives.

Check out the deck at https://www.cinedeck.com or contact GaryS@clarkmedia.com to find out more. We will have multiple units
    in our rental inventory.

May 16, 2010 at 10:13 pm in reply to: What you want from this forum

    Hello ARRI Forum…

I was not surprised to see the back and forth ARRI VS RED
argument… My dad is bigger than your dad…. I’d like to see the forum stay professional and comment specifically on the ARRI camera and it’s related workflows.

I’d like to see this forum for adopters of ARRI to share information
as to how they plan to use the camera in their market.

We’re a large rental facility using mostly Panasonic P2 technology and have been waiting for ARRI to come out with a 35mm format camera for the last year.

I’d like to see tips shared on how to maximize the flexibility of this new tool. We have 2 on order, and are planning to buy the Cinedeck and the portable from 1-Beyond to take advantage of off-board uncompressed 4:4:4 for high end green screens..

We also plan to use telecast fiber copperheads to use the ARRI in multi-camera environments. Recording to external KiPro or the above mentioned recorders..

We do not shoot for film projection. We mostly shoot high end TV spots, entertainment, and corporate.

For this market, we like the flexibility of having Apple Pro-Res
right in the camera… And other compressions available via off-board.

I’d love to hear what others think about ARRI accessories, like their lens, matte boxes etc…

    Tnx… Gary

October 11, 2009 at 11:45 am in reply to: Varicam sub models?

The 27V was the original one..
more of a traditional video camera without the film gammas.

    The 27F – second generation…
some early 27V were upgraded to 27F

The 27H – if you are buying a traditional tape based varicam
this is the one to get…. try to pick the a more recent
manufacture date… you can tell by serial number
the first few characters will be a letter and 2 numbers.

for example B06 – That would be February 2006

The newer the camera and the lower the hours… the better..

But… Panasonic just announced a special price on a
    P2 based 2700 Varicam… 19,950? with trade in..
This would be the best option..

all the features of a traditional Varicam – plus 10-Bit
    AVC-Intra recording….

contact the guys at https://www.MCCOM.TV – they have units in stock..
They may also have used Tape Varicams also…

We sold all our tape based – and bought 2700’s and 3700’s

    Good luck..

August 29, 2009 at 6:40 pm in reply to: Solid playback with P-2 viewer software…

    Thanks John…

That’s what we thought it was also… We provide the camera rentals and moving into data management ( out of necessity ) for our clients..

So, we don’t get to see the project through to post. We have clients looking over our shoulder during off-loading and confirmation of playback. The black flash scares everyone…

The FCP and Adobe premier programs take care of it, but we’re looking to see if there is any other P-2 type viewer that can accurately span the 4-GB files to provide smooth playback..

I’d love to hear if any others on this board experience the same
    hick-up during in-field playback ( without using a edit program )

    Tnx.. Gary

  • Interesting question on the 3700

We have an inventory of SDX-900’s and HDX-900’s and have
    recently bought (2) of the HPX-3700 and (1) HPX-2000 .

I think for it to work, you will need to be pro-active with your
clients to understand the workflow. Which is actually quite easy.

We are very impressed with the 3700’s AVC-Intra for green screen and
high end work. We may also be getting some codex digital recorders to take advantage of the 4:4:4 output of the camera…

We have used multiple SDX-900’s and HDX-900 for 4 – camera shoots.
Our clients will be moving to the 3700’s very shortly.

For data management, we’re using the Wrangler Pro from 1-beyond.
    https://www.1beyond.com

they also provide a very nice and compact 2-drive RAID 1 system that uses 320GB drives mounted in a shock mount shell. And only costing a little more than the off the shelf drives from Staples. With much
    higher quality…

We are sold on the P-2’s and will probably get more 3700’s under the trade up system…

Having said that… we may also be looking at the Sony PDW-F800’s

ah. the pleasures of running a rental company..

    tnx… Gary

    April 3, 2008 at 1:08 am in reply to: HDX 900 / AJ-RC10 ?

    Hello Andrew….

The HDX-900 and AJ-RC10 is a powerful combination. I suggest you have a qualifed HD tech give you a complete tutorial
on the best way to use the tool… Otherwise, you may fly the airplane into the mountain and not even know it…

That lets you focus on making pretty (and in-focus) pictures…

If you contact me off-line, I’d be happy to give you some names of some good HD techs that would fit the bill…

    I don’t know if you’re a owner/operator or if you’re renting from a rental facility..

Rental companies pride themselves on providing all the resources you may need to give you the look you are going for…

    Good shooting… Gary…
