Panasonic is offering a huge trade-in allowance towards the purchase of an HPX3700 Varicam. Just trade-in any working 2/3″ camcorder and $30,000 will be applied to a $60,000 HPX3700!

This would lead me to believe that the margins are huge on these cameras(which I already knew) and that the HPX3700 isn’t selling at all well. The lack of 60p must have something to do with it–besides the $60K price point, of course.

Still, picking up a Sony DXC-537/PVV-1 on eBay for a grand and getting an HPX3700 at half price is interesting. No discounts on the camera, no special financing, no P2 card cameras can be traded in, but they will take a RED ONE!

I’m going to have to cry BS on this one until an actual Panasonic site lists it with details. I’ve read this rumor on other forward and no one has ever come forward with proof.

    Hi Noah,

This is not official from Panasonic yet, but I received the email from my Abel Cinetech salesperson and saw a post from a broker on this site, McCom Inc, as well as another rental facility who first told me about it. So, yes, while unofficial and details subject to change, when a high-end Panasonic dealer communicates directly in writing to me, it is not an “Urban Legend” in my estimation.

I don’t doubt some sort of rebate may be in the works but I don’t think it will be as expansive as you’ve been told. Seems a little crazy to just give away $30,000 for *any* 2/3 camcorder, especially one you could get for $1,000. I’ll believe it when I see it on a website from Panasonic.

[Jeff Regan] ” but I received the email from my Abel Cinetech salesperson”

I will add my AbelCine person confirmed it as did a top level panasonic employee at HD Expo.

    I have asked for confirmation.

I spoke with Abel on the West Coast, they said Panny is drawing up a very specific list of which cameras will be accepted as trade-ins.

But, for the sake of argument, let’s say you could trade ANY beat up POS 2/3″ camera. Would you do it? Would you spend 30K to have a 3700?

Hmm, wonder if they’ll take the ancient Sony DXC-M3a I’ve got laying around as a trade in.

It has a removable lens and 2/3″ chips, er, tubes… close enough, right?
