FCP renders as it exports… however only the exported file benefits – the sequence itself stays as it was.
So I recommend rendering first and then exporting. If the computer is going to go to the trouble of rendering you may as well retain all it’s hard work.

I’m not a developer so I’m not an expert on this – but I am guessing that it would be difficult to license the ProRes codec to be included as part of your project.
The way it normally works (in applications such as Mpeg Streamclip) is that the application accesses your QuickTime component folder in your Library and whatever you have in that folder is used by the application. The application itself doesn’t include the codecs.

You have given us very little info. And some of the info is contradictory. Final Cut 7 and Snow Leopard don’t run on a Powerbook. I’m guessing you have MacBook Pro. We know you have shot on HDV. But we don’t know anything about how you captured the tapes or your sequence settings. Are you trying to make DVDs?
Trash your preferences using Preference Manager.
Can you export a QuickTime reference movie from FCP? Bring that into Compressor and make your DVD files? Bring into DVD Studio Pro and burn to disc?

They should either be both PAL or both be NTSC (PAL for UK, NTSC for US).

The best practice is to buy a new hard drive and do the whole operating system and application install from scratch. Then run Software Update (2 or 3 times until everything is up to date). This way you won’t run into any problems with any lingering parts of the old application.
Doing a fresh re-install is also very good for the soul.

Yes, you should reset scratch disks
It’s basically asking you where you want to put your media. At the moment it’s looking for your old drives. You want to tell it to reset it’s setting and look in a new place.
Don’t worry – it is not going to delete any media.

What’s the final purpose of the edit? If it’s for broadcast or high quality web then you’re going to need to have it converted by a hardware convertor. In the US Terranex seems to be the brand to ask for. Here in the UK you would ask for an Alchemist conversion. It can be very expensive.
If it’s not for broadcast then you can try using software solutions. Nattress makes an FCP Plugin, Compressor can do standards conversions but it can be a bit hit and miss. Mpeg Streamclip can do fast and dirty conversions too.

The new “Share” function does allow FCP 7 to make Blu-Rays (if you have a Blu-Ray burner)… but I’ve found it to be buggy and very slow.
We tend to instead use QT reference movies brought into Compressor and then use Adobe Encore to put the files together.
