May 5, 2010 at 2:18 pm in reply to: Mystery .yuv file

[Wayne Williams] “I have acquired a series of .yuv files that I need to transcode to MPEG 2. I tried going to Compressor directly and also doing a file import from final cut pro. Neither seem to recognize it.”

These sound like video files output direct from a Linux system.

try something- change the .YUV name to .MOV and see if you get an 8 bit 2vuy (uncompressed) video file.

May 2, 2010 at 3:04 pm in reply to: HDMI input from MacBook

[Marc Colemont] ” But the AJA Ki Pro does not want to read HDMI RGB, and the MacBook Pro does not has a setting to output YUV color space. “

    that is not the issue.

Your computer does not output a standard Video signal and AJa devices only see SMPTE / EBU video signals.

Occasionally you can do this if you have a computer that can correctly output 1080 at 24/25/50/60 hrz (depending on where you live in the world).

[Bruce Greene] “Unfortunately, VTR exchange is dropping frames, as is FCP. “

when these app’s are dropping frames your disk drives are Not fast enough to play back your content.

[Marc Colemont] ” as the composite output only becomes active when downscaling to SD??
Is there a certain setting that I can do instead”

    nope.
what are you using composite SD scopes for if you are not also monitoring in SD while in an HD capture?

April 30, 2010 at 4:21 pm in reply to: AJA Ki Pro vs. Nano Flash… Pros and cons?

    OK

Up front Disclaimer: I consult for both Sony and AJA, I even demo’d during the KiPro launch tour , but it is not the only DDR I use.

Nano flash is smaller/ lighter/ less expensive
it only captures content as Mpeg.
FCP does not edit Mpeg easily
It only captures 8 bit, even though most cameras output 10bit over HDSDI.
    No component,
No Up Down or Cross Conversions
    No remote functionality.
FCP does not like the high bandwidth mpeg flavors

    KiPro is larger more complicated
    Shoots only Apple ProRes
    Always records 10bit prores
    Component, HDMI, HDSDI
    remote control and setup
Soon to have RS422 Serial Control
Soon to have Gang Record functions (trucks or Stereo)

The KiPro costs more because it does more, with the upcoming software updates you should be able to use it as a recorder and a deck too….

April 30, 2010 at 4:11 pm in reply to: Kipro and canon DSLR camera

[Alex Desrial] “I heard info today that KiPro can work with Canon 5D/7D DSLR camera”

    only in Playback.

The DSLR’s are using restricted HDMI outputs, so you cannot currently capture a full band width live signal over HDMI from any of the DSLR models.
YOU can use the KiPro as an HDMI to HDSI converter before the shoot- allowing you a true HD monitor to check focus and framing- then convert straight to prores in Realtime when playing back, this will also allow you to add TC to the conversion, as there is NO timecode over HDMI.

April 30, 2010 at 1:34 pm in reply to: Raw Files?

[Peter Spenceley] “What would you normally output to?”

AVCHD is a camera codec not a delivery codec.

What does your client need or want for finals? – That is what you need to be delivering.

April 29, 2010 at 5:24 pm in reply to: Raw Files?

[Cole Prine] “If you’re going to be handling the online edit, and finishing out the project, then you’ll probably want the RAW files to make sure you end up with the best quality possible. “

    For the record
the camera mentioned Sony HRX-NX5U shoots AVCHD which is not considered a Raw format, but that means that you should maintain the recording media’s data structure, just like you would with P2 or SxS media.

” RAW files are basically uncompressed files. “

    Nope, sorry.

The actual data coming directly off the sensor without conversion (de-mosaicing or de-bayering) is considered RAW and that data is highly compressed when compared to the output of RGB / Y’Cb’Cr’ image data. Thats why there are multiple types of RAW formats for both still and video.

IMHO RED’s R3D format being the most efficient at sensor compression, when you consider that 4K R3D files that can play in realtime on a single sata drive vs. working in 4K DPX frames that require over 1.25 GIGABYTES PER SECOND.

“But be sure to back-up regularly. We all know how easily a drive can crash on you.”

    always good advice.

April 29, 2010 at 2:19 pm in reply to: AJA IO HD 1080/25 uncompressed not working !!!

[Alen Jelic] ” capture in 1080/25 uncompressed final cut wasn’t able to capture it ! “

    Alen

The IoHD is only certified for capture of Uncompressed SD content, not HD, HD capture is limited to ProRes only.

This is due to the bandwidth limitations of the FW Buss so No. you cannot move than much data in realtime.

[Scott Erlinder] “Sorry, forgot to tell you, we hear the audio digital chatter even in the headphones coming right off the Ki Pro. “

that sounds like your audio is dolby or mixed as 5.1

only 2 channels of audio right now.
