I said that Final Cut does cannot see SMTPE TC signal over SDI, it is embedded into the data stream, it is just that final cut pro cannot currently read it.

October 1, 2005 at 11:40 am in reply to: Studio Varicam Shoot with a HD-SDI capture…advice please.[Matt] “Has anyone had any experience capturing live on set via HD-SDI and if so how did they feel about the image quality and which codec did you use?”
I do this monthly, and I have done this in the 8bit, 10bit, DVCPROHD, and (down-converting to) DV25
compressions, The K2 can actively see the flagged frames and remove them.[Matt] “”It is important to understand that only the camera section operates at variable frame rates. The VTR and the camera HD-SDI output operate at a constant 60-fps rate.”” This is correct, the camera ALWAYS plays 60 frames to the video stream.
There are issues with FCP capturing live on set – FCP does not record TC over SDI, and the “Capture Now process is very hardware intensive so be prepared.

[Dale McCready] “an you do a preset that will ingest via firewire at 25P? I’m possible doing an ad on Tuesday that would be great on the Varicam, especially if I could do the post too at 25FPS.”
NO. 25fps in not a “native” frame rate on the varicam and is not addressable over FW.
the only frame rates available over FW are
23.98, 24, 29.97, 30, 59.94, & 60 (and those depend on whether the camera is set to 59.94\60 hz respectively)Gary Adcock

We’ll be coming out of a JH-3 HDCAM deck and through a Kona-2 duel link HD-SDI interface card directly into Final Cut Pro on a Power Mac G5 Duel 2.3 GHz. “These say 2 different things? if you are capturing direct from the camera into FCP you will not get correct timecode on your records, you will get Ubit unless you plan first if you record from the deck the TC will be accurate. FCP does not see smtp timecode over HDSDI.
[Dog Jack Pictures] “What I’m wondering is, would you recommend capturing to a higher compression ratio for a better quality image than FCP’s photo-jpeg preset for HD at 384×216?”
Why not DVCPROHD? BUT Yes you can change the compression manually.ON RT
You “loose” RT on the conversion normally because there is not much realtime in 1080 UC workflows even on the fastest machines. IT’s also because most people try to do this on underpowered machines.Gary Adcock

September 27, 2005 at 12:49 pm in reply to: Scanning Slides in FCP for Ken Burns type effect[David Roth Weiss] “What would you imagine might be the difference to a video person, like yourself, between a scan made on a $200 scanner vs. one made a $10000.00 scanner?”
the same difference that separates a disposable camera and something with real professional glass.
The difference is in a scanners ability to record the image accurately, Highlight to shadow detail, Dmax ( max density of blacks)
and maybe even the need to record an image that is not from a 35mm camera, some people still shoot sheet film for print, and that content often appears in commercials. On the realistic side, if you are working in DV25 in NTSC are you going to see the difference- I doubt it,
but remember that these lists cover people all over the world, doing all kinds of things. If the original poster was working in Film or HD, Yes the difference could be Very Very noticeable, and I just saw a project rejected from broadcast due to bad still scans in the project. The question reminds me of the vendor at all the trade shows selling a $200 No Name DV camera. Yeah it works, but don’t use it for anything and god forbid you tried to match that footage with something from your DVX100

September 26, 2005 at 1:23 pm in reply to: Paging Mr. Zelin – Panther to Tiger question:[weevie833] ”
I have recently been advised that the only way to ensure that you will have clean performance from Tiger is if you wipe the drive first then install, which stands as unconventional practice and certainly an inconvenience.
What has been your experience in this regard? I have an upcoming project that will require HDV compatibility and I am going to partition my G5/K2 with Tiger FCP 5 and 10.3.8/FCP 4.5 just for safety.”Steve, While IMHO. I do not feel that I wipe and install is NOT the way to go for an upgrade, I Always wipe any machine that comes direct from Apple to clean out all the crap that gets in the way for video.
The only trick that I have for upgrading machines (which I do regularly 2 / 3x a week) is always upgrade the OS and Quicktime FIRST then upgrade FCP & the apps and everything seems to work correctly. I also remove all plugins when I upgrade and add back only the ones I have tested and made sure are working.

[Walter Biscardi] “Will be doing that on both of my systems in a few weeks after we finish our latest round of episodes. My client’s system is brand spankin new and we’re seeing the issue there too with 720p HD SDI captures.”
Are you on 10.4.2 / FCP5.02 / QT7.02?
this was reported to apple as a 7.0 and now a 7.02 bug.it was fixed in the 7.01 version and rebroke in 7.02

September 22, 2005 at 10:21 pm in reply to: Converting 25fps HDV into a 24fps DVCPROHD File with FCP[Avenger] ”
-convert the hdv material to 720p 25fps dvcpro hd via compressor.
-conform the framerate from 25 to 24 via cinema tools.
-import the forme hdv footage to the dvcpro hd 24fps timeline and edit. “I agree with John here, you are asking for a large problem. the very first of which is compressor will do a terrible job on the conversion because HDV and DVCPROHD use different compression blocks, and CT does not necessarily accept what compressor creates when it comes to frame rates.
I personally have gotten much better results from an up-converted DVX100 at 24p than I can get from the Sony with 25f- 24p conversion.
