  • Paging Mr. Zelin – Panther to Tiger question:

Posted by Steve Covello on September 25, 2005 at 11:19 pm

So far I have had loads of problems with Tiger and have read in Macfixit about various OS issues to such an extent that I will stay at 10.3.8 for a while longer on FCP 4.5.

I beta tested Tiger on two non-critical G4 duals at the time, and did a “standard” ugrade from Panther to Tiger, meaning, I simply upgraded rather than erased the disk from scratch.

I have recently been advised that the only way to ensure that you will have clean performance from Tiger is if you wipe the drive first then install, which stands as unconventional practice and certainly an inconvenience.

What has been your experience in this regard? I have an upcoming project that will require HDV compatibility and I am going to partition my G5/K2 with Tiger FCP 5 and 10.3.8/FCP 4.5 just for safety.

This is absolutely correct and should be followed with each major OS upgrade. I always erase all my system drives and re-install all software from scratch for a major upgrade. Two systems here and several more installed for clients and all are running fine with Tiger / FCP 5.

In fact, I erase all my systems once a year and re-install everything to keep it all running smoothly. Usually over the Holiday break at the end of the year.

Walter is completely correct, and you should follow this advice (God, I hate myself for saying that !).

Thanks for making me spit up my coffee this morning Bob! Too funny! What’s scary is that we’re agreeing with each other more and more on this forum. 🙂

Steve, While IMHO. I do not feel that I wipe and install is NOT the way to go for an upgrade, I Always wipe any machine that comes direct from Apple to clean out all the crap that gets in the way for video.

The only trick that I have for upgrading machines (which I do regularly 2 / 3x a week) is always upgrade the OS and Quicktime FIRST then upgrade FCP & the apps and everything seems to work correctly. I also remove all plugins when I upgrade and add back only the ones I have tested and made sure are working.
