sorry joe
that is how the decklink works. the HDP from AJA would allow you to scale the image, but not the decklink unit.Gary Adcock

operator error
make sure to set FCP to view all frames and the video out setting is matched up to the seq settings.this can happen if you bounce between a lot of settings= the easy setups do not always reset the video out

[Jeff Bernstein] “Bob is dead on with why agencies haven’t moved to HD. I will also add that it also has to do with the Post Facilities telling them about the HUGE cost differential. “
I guess it is where you live, and the focus of your clients. I do a lot of Car stuff and it seems that all of the manufacturers are even posting in HD, but in that world it is the locals that will not accept the HD masters.
Funny too, that the companies that originate on film are not too concerned about the minimal addition of cost when posting in HD, due to the large budgets involved.

[Oliver Peters] “The real answer is that spots will be HD when you have enough critical mass of CEOs who own HDTV TV sets.”
How true
I was speaker for 7 sessions at NAB Post Plus in NYC 2 weeks ago and I started every HD session with the question
“who has an HD set at home?” not surprisingly never more than 1% of my audience was watching HD at Home
My session on the HD edit suite was the only one where more than 10% of the attendees answered in the affirmative.Gary Adcock

[matthew Romanis] “While it is correct to say that there is not a PAL version as such, it may be misleading to say this to the point that people may not think it can be used with a PAL outcome in mind.”
the same can be said of Film, which can support PAL, but is not PAL specific. PAL specific cameras in HD sometimes only mean they support the 25p /50i frame rates – At this point in time until the VariCam supports native FW capture of 720p25 those of us on this side of the world in NTSC land
[Robert Griffiths] “I would rather do a downconvert from Varicam “NTSC” HD to DVCPRO50 SD… than a standards convert from PAL to NTSC going the SDX900 way.”
Nah stay in 720p until you need to go to SD. the data rate for 720p25 material is less than 6 mgs per second –or exactly the same as that DV50 footage at 29.97

November 23, 2005 at 2:49 pm in reply to: Advanced Pulldown, Cinema Tools, and SDI capture[Graeme Nattress] “Simple answer is don’t capture over SDI. I don’t see what earthly benefit you’ll gain from it.”
Graeme and I disagree on the benefits of SDI capture, I do see a difference on my scopes and hardware. IMHO the uncompressed files are always better than a DV file from the same footage, but that difference comes at a price for additional storage and hardware.
[Graeme Nattress] ” as soon as you try to go over SDI you’ve lost your flags and you’re going to have a hell of a time mucking around removing pulldown.”
When capturing from a Panasonic Deck, the RP188 TC flags are correctly indicated for the standard 3.2 pulldown removal over SDI. The Advanced pulldown is a different story however.

[Robert Griffiths] “How about a Varicam? I checked the specs and it seems that the NTSC and PAL models both record 720x60p. Does this mean I can shoot in Europe with a 4×3 grad, bring the camera masters back to the US and do a simple downconvert to DVCPRO50 4×3? (God, it can’t be that simple) I would prefer to rent a camera/DP in Europe for both locations.”
1) there is not a PAL version of the Varicam.
2) 24p is 24p all over the world– the only caveat is to make sure the camera is set to 59.94 and NOT 60 hrz when needing to work in NTSC
3) other than finding a DP and camera it really is that simple.

November 23, 2005 at 1:13 am in reply to: Wanting to do Uncompressed HD, trial by fire….[Guy] “Have you tried looking at the picture with “view as square pixels” turned off?”
Walter and I have been working with DVCPROHD for awhile, (I have 3+ years in the format) and both of us agree that it does not work.
the files are 2 different sizes / aspect ratios we are not talking about some sort of scaling issues in FCP and while the compressed version of the format is also 8bit the difference in the aspect and compression ratios will cause the resulting output to fail the network standards.
