  • [Pierson] “When dissolving from a Black and White photo (.PNG, .targa, .tiff) to black, there is a greenish cast during the event–the vectorscope backs me up.”

if your not using any media and doing a cross dissolve to a blank canvas that is correct.
dropping a a black slug in has been known to correct the problem.

[tony salgado] “You don’t want to hire a warm body fourteen year old PA who thinks he understand the importance of the digital files. After all he did figured out how to play an Xbox in under a hour.”

com’on tony — he could probably program all of the VCR’s correctly too.

[tony salgado] “My personal solution to all this is to wait it out and see how a clear workflow is established or hold out for the Grass Valley Infinity system.”

Sorry– I will not ever be able to use anything that has iomega media as it’s foundation. I still have nightmares about the now infamous Jaz Drive “clicking” angrily at me in the background, destroying every piece of media I try to get it to read.

  • [mike] “Actually…24 fps and 30fps audio is the same speed. Each encompasses one second of time. What you are refering to is most likely…. film transfered to video which is now at the rate of 29.97 which is slower than your recorded audio.”

    not really.
audio is recorded as a length of time in minutes and seconds, it does not record in “frames” in any systems that I know of, you are just talking about the time code. There is not a spec in the Aiff format for frames, only time so, one second of audio is one second no matter that frame rate it is shot at.

[maya30] ” am cutting a film with 24p clips but on a 23.98 sequence. Does anybody know if it’s going to create any problems when i export the EDL to negative cut? would there be a synch problem?”

No- virtually all offline for film are done in this manner, and 24p is 23.98 in video land.

  • [john chater] “So are you saying with a G4 Powerbook we should use Firewire 800 to the HDD? If so will we have to use Firewire400 on the new MacBooks?”

    hey john
FW 400 is the way to go. I have tested this using the current P2 Card reader in both my laptop and in a Macbook pro (what a stupid name!) What ever connection you have to a car reader is most likely going to be USB and any other connections will cause a problem.

[john chater] ” What import times are you getting from a full a 8gb card? Faster that 13-14mins?” I have only tested 2 -8g cards ( i only have 4’s) and in all cases my tests approx. follow the 1gig per minute transfers — the more ram, the faster the drives, the faster the transfer my 4g cards transfer at about 45 secs per gig.

January 17, 2006 at 4:12 pm in reply to: HDV…sony or panasonic?

[Will Salley] ” I shoot green-screen with a Sony Z1 on a regular basis and get very good results. There are other problems with the HDV codec that make it unsuitable for certain jobs, but for 95% of the time, the 1080i output from the Z1 will work fine.”

    Sorry will
I just finished cleaning up a huge mess where some “got good results” from the Zu1 and then had to redo all of the green screen material to get it pass thru the transmission standards.
I am glad that it works for you, but for an HD broadcast delivery trying the key HDV footage does not cut it.

[walter biscardi] “All I know is that it’s really hard for me to work in anything that’s interlaced anymore. Progressive is such a beautiful format to work in. I’ll be trying to do all of our production from here on out in progressive.”

    True true, I agree walter.

I had an extended “discussion” with someone at macworld last week that could not get that it is easy to acquire in one format and deliver in another- I kept saying “film” and he kept say “that’s different”

    but it’s not.

[williamsdp] “I checked with my contacts at Panasonic and they told me that both machines (AJ-HD1200a or the AJ-HD130) will record and playback whatever is fed to them. That is, if you playback a tape recorded on the Varicam with flags, they both will play back the flags as they are part of the user bits.”

Correct but note that tapes recorded in the 1200 will not playback in the 130. BUT tapes recorded from the 130 will play in the 1200. This is due to the change in recording head between the units.

The panasonic decks can record flags generated from NLEs that indicate the editing timebase (23.98 29.97, 59.94) but not any other flags.

[walter biscardi] “Does the 130 flag the 23.98 frames or does it only record 59.94 with no User Bits? The 1200A also only records at 59.94 but it can flag the 24 frames with User Bits turned on for recapture at a later date.”

The 130 flags frames just like all the rest of the decks do. UB is kept in the RP188 TC stream.

  • [john chater] “The USB2 connection was from the G4 to the HDD. We chose the import to FCP option because that allows us to quickly scan the imported footage for any corrupted data before we erased the card. “

    John
this is not a recommended workflow for FCP as FCP does not support USB for scratch disks due to the packeting protocols.

did you reformat the USB drive for the Mac OS? That will slow you down also.
