[Mike Schrengohst] “With FCP 5.1.1
Shoot 1080 24pA Start a new sequence and you will find a 1080 24p template. Import footage from P2”Mike,
My FCP5.1.1 does not have any easy setup for 1080 24pABut when you check the box to “remove redundant frames / advanced pulldown” in the P2 import window in FCP5.1 and later – it can only remove the advanced codec from the 108024pA footage or the standard 3:2 from the 1080 24p settings- it does work just fine with both setting in my tests/
on 720p material shot “offspeed” it will do nothing as that is not a standard 3:2 pulldown for the cadence.–you still need to use teh FRC. 720p24 material is imported as if it were shot in the 24PN mode.

Stick to the Name brands (acom is not a name in the editing world) Then your drives come with support and a warranty.
I am using mostly G-tech Drives now — all flavors of them with no problems, forced cooling, with great pricing and performance.
Also start thinking about something other than FW. As your video workflow gets more involved the need for redundancy and back up for your precious projects will become more and more necessary.

[michael] “Does anyone know when FCP will release 25p support for the HVX?”
There has not been any “official” announcement that other than to say it is coming.
I do know that the new Kona Drivers posted late last week now include 720p50 settings that do work with the 25p capture from the HVX “e” models. You need more than a camera for the post side of things, at the very least to be able to monitor and deliver content and finally the manufacturers are listening to fill some of the gap in the FCP world.

[Cinemacell] “I was disappointed to find that among the list of recording settings, there was no setting for 1080p/24p – only 1080i/24p (which does not make sense to me, I mean how can you shoot a 1080 interlaced picture and have a 24 progressive frame rate? – confusing)”
The in-camera recording in all HD cameras for 1080 24 is PSF (that is progressive segmented frame) True “p” recording requires and HDSDI signal out to D-5 or SR decks.
This is the format that was designed by Sony to maintain legacy. As the other poster said this is the same process one uses in the NTSC world to get 24p materials, and the camera does it in pretty much the same manner in 1080.1080p on all but the highest end displays always plays back at 48i and not on any consumer display will it play as truly progressive.
[Cinemacell] “Question is – is there a setting for 1080p/24p on the HVX? If so where do I find it?”
it’s called 1080 24pA and that allows the user a clean “c frame” and auto advanced pulldown removal when ingesting the material in FCP 5.1 or later. The footage is properly imported into FCP as 1080 24psf – the native format for 1080 24 material[Cinemacell] “And when it comes to editing it on an Mac running Final Cut, what settings should the sequence be? – (There is no DVCPROHD 1080/24p setting amongst the list of settings in FC)”
Just because APPLE did not add a preset does not mean that it cannot be done. It requires the User to create a custom setup to handle the footage in the timeline. – But note that the playback still needs to be 60i as the tape format for DVCPROHD is always 60 frames or 60 fields.

June 4, 2006 at 2:50 pm in reply to: Step by step workflow guide for HVX200 and Firestore FS-100 shooting 720 24p (link)[Danrnw] “My problem with this camera is that P2 workflow sucks.”
There are any number of solutions for the P2 workflow- just because Panny is not holding your hand and guiding you every step of the process dose not mean that there are not workable solutions. IT means that you have not found them or have not found someone that understands YOUR specific needs- Every single person I know use a different method for their work. The Firestore is a single solution, but buying or renting more cards solves a vast majority of issues for most filmmakers.
[Danrnw] “If you are not very careful you can actually record over what you already shot pretty easily.”
Not while the material is still on the cards not you cannot easily record over them – now if your “workflow” is not properly established prior to commencing your project – then the fault is solely operator error. The ability to record over the existing content on a card has to be MANUALLY set in a sub menu in the HVX 200. And it is not in a place a casual user would know or find.[Danrnw] “In my world of interviews and studio shoots, this is not viable.”
this is the most viable time to use the P2 technology, Indoors not moving no run and gun???
I have shot 90min continuous interviews with 5- 4gig cards. – and no extra bodies to handle the ingest. I did a location shoot in italy in march where I shot 4 hours of P2 footage every day for 10 straight days, by myself.
I had one issue and it was my fault for ejecting both cards from the camera at the same time while I was recording. It is a new and different way to work and it requires a thought out approach to the way you shoot and the way you handle the files. Just because the process is not to your liking does not mean workflows do not exist.
[Danrnw] “I have to record to p2 cards at 2 grand a piece and then wait 2 times longer than real time to get the footage into FCP.”
I wonder if you have ever used this camera. As many of your posts are not accurate in what and how the camera actually works. The 4 gig cards can record 10min of 720p24 HD and cost less than US $600.
The 8 gig cards are under US$1400 now and record 20mins of 720p24 per card — That 20 mins of footage from the 8 gig card takes about 6 mins to import into FCP on my 1.67 G4 laptop (depends on how many clips- with any transfer process the less number of files the faster the import)22 mins was a standard Betacam load- so there are more than a few Non-DV shooters that do not have issues with the length of the record time.- being able to hot swap the cards continuously makes the process easier than one might think. You just need a better set of sticks to hold the camera on.

[Saddler] “So, I gave up and uninstalled to reinstall version 1.2.2, but it tells me there’s nothing to install!
Sure would be nice to be able to use my KONA2 … SOON!”Did you think to do an UNINSTALL???
You cannot run an older version of an installer without doing an uninstall first…Make it a habit to always uninstall prior to installing a new driver.

[Nick Gardner] “I was shooting at various frame rates but I did not do any ramps or speed changes during a take.”
How much header did you put prior to each shot.
Did the editor use Capture Now instead of using a batch capture?
How experienced is your editor with FCP and using DVCPROHD from a varicam?I said that was what the FRC was created for. – Because your editor was capturing across the speed changes -even if you started and stopped the camera between frame rate changes the underlying pulldown changed between the clips -throwing FCP into a tizzy
Recommend that camera ops have 10-15 seconds of black before any capture of offseed materials- or better yet do all of the off speed on a separate tape with large amounts of header between each change with a Slate to identify.
