1080p/24p on HVX possible?
Posted by Markford Astina on June 4, 2006 at 1:26 pmHi!
I just recently worked with the a P2 camera.
I was disappointed to find that among the list of recording settings, there was no setting for 1080p/24p – only 1080i/24p (which does not make sense to me, I mean how can you shoot a 1080 interlaced picture and have a 24 progressive frame rate? – confusing)
Question is – is there a setting for 1080p/24p on the HVX? If so where do I find it?
And when it comes to editing it on an Mac running Final Cut, what settings should the sequence be? – (There is no DVCPROHD 1080/24p setting amongst the list of settings in FC)
Anyways we ended up shooting in 1080i/24p and edited in a sequence with DVCPROHD 1080/60i settings.
However, I would like to shoot and edit 1080p/24p using the HVX – is this possible.
And if so – how?
Thanks greatly for your help.

June 4, 2006 at 2:43 pmSeems to me that the camara uses the same process to record 24p as the DVX series of cameras. In which case at some point if you want to work with the footage and only the 24 frames, some form of pulldown removal will be required.

The in-camera recording in all HD cameras for 1080 24 is PSF (that is progressive segmented frame) True “p” recording requires and HDSDI signal out to D-5 or SR decks.
This is the format that was designed by Sony to maintain legacy. As the other poster said this is the same process one uses in the NTSC world to get 24p materials, and the camera does it in pretty much the same manner in 1080.1080p on all but the highest end displays always plays back at 48i and not on any consumer display will it play as truly progressive.

it’s called 1080 24pA and that allows the user a clean “c frame” and auto advanced pulldown removal when ingesting the material in FCP 5.1 or later. The footage is properly imported into FCP as 1080 24psf – the native format for 1080 24 material[Cinemacell] “And when it comes to editing it on an Mac running Final Cut, what settings should the sequence be? – (There is no DVCPROHD 1080/24p setting amongst the list of settings in FC)”
Just because APPLE did not add a preset does not mean that it cannot be done. It requires the User to create a custom setup to handle the footage in the timeline. – But note that the playback still needs to be 60i as the tape format for DVCPROHD is always 60 frames or 60 fields.

June 4, 2006 at 9:45 pmWith FCP 5.1.1
Shoot 1080 24pA
Start a new sequence and you will
find a 1080 24p template.
Import footage from P2
Check the box remove duplicate frames/pulldown
Then once your file is imported
click it and go to tools –
Cinema Tools reverse telecine.
You now have a 1080 24p clip ready for editing.Mike Schrengohst

June 5, 2006 at 12:40 amI don’t have FCP 5.1.1 yet, but why would you have to go to cinema tools when the advanced pulldown frame should be removed on import?
Just curious.

June 5, 2006 at 12:47 amGood question,
because it does not. I check it for anything
except pN fooage
I have been on the Apple boards but
they have no anwers.
I have tested both ways but the Cinema Tools
reverse telecine is still needed.
I also have Edius and you can bring in
1080 24pA footage directly.
But Edius is rather lame when it
comes to color correction.
The good thing about Edius is the fact
you can view .mxf files and an info box
shows you what the file specs are.
Now Apple needs to do this without
having to buy another piece of software. -

My FCP5.1.1 does not have any easy setup for 1080 24pABut when you check the box to “remove redundant frames / advanced pulldown” in the P2 import window in FCP5.1 and later – it can only remove the advanced codec from the 108024pA footage or the standard 3:2 from the 1080 24p settings- it does work just fine with both setting in my tests/
on 720p material shot “offspeed” it will do nothing as that is not a standard 3:2 pulldown for the cadence.–you still need to use teh FRC. 720p24 material is imported as if it were shot in the 24PN mode.

You are right the easy set-ups are 1080 60i and 50i,
For 1080 24p
Start a new sequence then click sequence settings/load sequence preset
and you will see DVCPRO HD 108024p
then the 1080 24pA clips you do a reverse telcine on
play in this sequence without rendering.Mike Schrengohst
