Hey Bob
I was at DP in Feb. talking about the Kona 3, I do not have anything scheduled yet, but we are working on something for the early fall time frame however. ( and I get points for going to the twin cities in feb too.!)
My guess is that the VTR exchange has a lot less tolerance towards errors in the serial connection than FCP does. IT has too so that it works with the new 2K capture on the K3. FCP is quite sloppy with it’s tolerances for that kind of connection.

Maybe that is the problem
I think that VTR exchange needs to be getting a real time RS422 response that it is not getting from the serial to firewire to serial connection in an amount of time it expects so it sees it as a failure or lack of serial control.
that would be my first guess.

[walter biscardi] “I thought it was about $5,000 – $10,000 US.”
The price on mine was $5200. (no DVI out)
a lot better than the hundred of thousands of dollars for the same basic functions 3 years ago.

[Nick Gardner] “ot a call from the editor saying that there were time code breaks in the middle of about six shots. Not at the end of the shot but in the middle during the take….. Was shooting at various frame rates for a 24fps time line.”
by changing the frame rate during the shot- you changed the cadence of the redundant frames that FCP was looking to remove. FCP therefore assumed that there was a break in the TImecode –
my guess is that your editor saw there was an issue in the capture (FCP tells you there is a “Cadence Error”) and just assumed there was a TC break.

[richard ladkani] “I just heard from an editor that the camera cannot record 1080p in 25p to the firestore drives because the datarate is too high. Is this true?”
your editor needs to look at the file a little closer.
Recording data is 1080 50i and yes that would be a higher data rate than 25p
it is the nature of the firestore unit to record the video the same as it would be on tape.the Firestore does not record in the PN mode

[walter biscardi] “If you’re not happy with the output of the Decklink, find any post house that has a Teranex converter.”
This has been my experience as well. I have seen a number (over half a dozen) Projects get rejected in the US using this scenario, I would recommend the Teranex mini if your on a budget.

[Saddler] “Careful, I installed the Kona2 update and it hosed my system!”
I have installed all 3 of the the current k2 / k3 and LH builds on 7 machines in the last 2 days with out any issues.
I did have the Fcp5.11 / QT 7.1.1 trash the OS on my non laptop however with NO kona card attached.SO
was everything up to date before your install?
QT also?
did you install anything else at the same time or did you move anything around prior to the restart.
Are you sure you grabbed the correct driver versions[Saddler] “This is on a dual 2.7 w/ the very latest revision of Tiger.”
Since you say that it hosed your system but other than the little info none of us have anything to go on.gary adcock

[MikeShot] “you’re suggesting that we use the analog outputs of the kona to record to tape?”
No
Only the digital ports can be set to zero on that deck. It is my understanding that the analog out is always 7.5 ire

[dopocc] “Thanks and sorry if this still seems crazy, maybe it’s late but I still think it could work for tight situations (if the PCI bandwidth is not an issue).”
Bill
It is my understanding all of the card based expansion is only for PCI — Not PCI-x, NOT PCIe
so that Kona board is not going to work… it needs PCIx to functionsI however can and do run my Kona LS (sd only) on my magma (but the Io is a better option for this)
