  • Black Level Problem out of FCP to DBETA (KONA2)

Posted by Mikeshot on June 1, 2006 at 2:16 pm

We need to ship a graphic for broadcast on DBETA over “SUPERBLACK”

Our AE exported quicktime reads 0,0,0 and the output in the FCP sequence does as well (using FCP’s waveform monitor). Upon editing to tape, our black levels are not super black but back to 7.5. We’ve tried a bunch a test (different renders/codecs etc.) and can’t seem to get our heads around this. Is it a FCP setting? Don’t think so. Is it a deck setting?

If anyone has any advice on SUPERBLACK and getting it out of FCP onto DBETA that would be very much appreciated.

Check your AJA Control Panel, it’s probably set for 7.5. It’s in the Setup tab of the Control Panel under Analog Black Level. Change it to 0.

thank you walter, i appreciate your help, to double check: you’re suggesting that we use the analog outputs of the kona to record to tape?

Perhaps it’s your deck that is adding the setup. Menu through and make sure. Are you laying off SDI?

this is a bit of a shoot in the dark, but on M2000 sony decks you enable/disable setup in the menu on the front panel of the deck. I don’t remember the name of the config… I think it’s “Levels” but I do remember it was not a clear name. You can toggle it between ‘-100’, ‘preset’ and ‘+100’. This is probably what you are searching for.

    Try this.
On our older Sony DVW-500 series decks it’s menu item #713 – V.Setup Reference Level. If you have a newer deck, it should be a similar menu item. Change the value from 7.5% down to 0% and it should record your video with 0% setup and maintain the super black in your graphic.
    Worth a try.

[MikeShot] “you’re suggesting that we use the analog outputs of the kona to record to tape?”

    No

Only the digital ports can be set to zero on that deck. It is my understanding that the analog out is always 7.5 ire
