April 25, 2013 at 1:45 pm in reply to: Color Bit Depth Question

[Erik Lindahl] “Apple ProRes 4444 supports image sources up to 12 bits and preserves alpha sample depths up to 16 bits. All Apple ProRes 422 codecs support up to 10-bit image source”

Let us not forget that you do not magically gain bit depth by using a 10 or 12bit codec in post when you shoot 8bits in camera. While the conform between color spaces is vastly improved, unless you are manipulating the original image, most users will not see the difference, it is very noticeable on a vectorscope.

April 24, 2013 at 1:50 pm in reply to: IO XT noisy

[Anhtu Vu] “I’m on my third IO XT replacement…still the same problem, these things are annoyingly noisy. Is this normal ???”

What are you doing that the fan runs all the time? I do not find the ioXT noisy at all, used in a variety of situations without issue.

Dont cover it up or put drives on it both of those things will cause the unit to run hot.

April 15, 2013 at 5:10 pm in reply to: Lhi Sync

[Nigel Thompson] “Never has made a difference to the final project before.

BUT this out of sync issue has happened before with DVCPRO HD footage/Projects”

Just because your computer worked yesterday does not mean it will work today.

Mixing codecs is the issue- purge your render files, set your timeline to SAFE and re-render. you are trying to screw around with Realtime playback and with the varying levels of compression in your files the RT engine is doing the best it can.

[Nigel Thompson] “Is this an issue you just cant get around? An FCP 7 issue ?”

    Nigel.

something is not right in your time line. Have you done a mixdown of the audio?

have you rendered out the file completely?

This is an issue between the audio rendering and the video formats, the hardware is just making you aware of the error.

[Bob Zelin] “are you using a 2006 Mac Pro with Model Identifier 1,1 ?”

Or he is using compressed audio without using an actual physical piece of media for the slugs.

Leaving blank areas for black, when using compressed VO’s or music will cause this too.

April 5, 2013 at 1:33 am in reply to: work natively at 2.40:1 at HD

[Jason Brown] “Irregardless, it’s the ASPECT we are discussing. We have a 2.40:1 project option in 5K, but not in HD.

    EH?
You are the one not following the existing standards for deliverables.

If you plan on delivering 1080, you should have shot something that fit the screen. Its not a software issue, IMHO it’s a user not working to a fixed deliverable.

No theatre I know of displays 5k?
    2K,4K and 8K yes,but 5K is a RED Only format.

April 3, 2013 at 1:38 pm in reply to: work natively at 2.40:1 at HD

[Jason Brown] “Am I seeing this right? What’s up with that?”

Yes that would be correct, there is not a direct scale from any 2:40 aspect ratio into the 1:78aspect ratio of 16×9 HD with out cropping or letterboxing.

“We shot 5K at a 2.40:1 aperture. FCPX has a project for those dimensions (5120×2160) but I can’t work downscaled in HD at clean pixel dimensions”

That is correct: divide 5120×2160 into 1920×1080.

Most Video editing app’s only natively support the SMPTE output specs and frame rasters.

April 2, 2013 at 1:13 pm in reply to: Kona 3G Capture Desktop

[Michael Bekkers] “The thing is, in the driver that comes with the capture card, we want to select the current desktop as input. So, we want to output our desktop to the RGB cables. We don’t know if it is possible, but we do suppose it is.

Does anyone have any experience with this card or with the software we need?

You cannot capture the desktop image steam of the computer the card is residing in.

Why not use a software application like Captivate if all you are trying to record is the action on the computer desktop.
