Color Bit Depth Question
Posted by Michael W. towe on April 22, 2013 at 11:52 pmI just received some broadcast specs for a client of mine which is requiring delivery to Aberdeen. Their spec sheet calls for ProRes 422 LT which is not a problem, but they want a bit depth of 8bit. The footage for the project is being shot in ACVIntra 100 at 10bit. I am assuming that when it goes on the timeline in X it preserves the 10 bit color space. Is there a way to force the timeline to an 8bit color space in X?
Thanks in advance,

April 23, 2013 at 12:18 amPro Res LT is 8 bit . I think by exporting a pro res lt file from your AVC I time line, you will have arrived at an 8 bit file.

April 23, 2013 at 1:21 amExcellent! I was under the impression that all PreRes respected the original bit depth. In this case I am happy I was wrong!
Thanks again!

April 23, 2013 at 2:34 amAll flavors of ProRes are 10bit.
There’s no way that I know of to force an 8bit render in fcpx.
I’m sure there’ll be fine with your ProRes LT file.
Send a test file for compliance.

April 23, 2013 at 4:14 pmAaaaaand once again the internet strikes back with contradictory information. I’m going with the 10 bit answer as that’s what I originally thought it was, and Wikipedia confirms this and we all know Wikipedia is never wrong. I’ll be running some tests with Abredeen as well since this is the first time using them. I’ll report back with the results.

April 23, 2013 at 4:50 pmApple has a white paper about ProRes: https://images.apple.com/finalcutpro/docs/Apple_ProRes_White_Paper_October_2012.pdf

April 24, 2013 at 6:12 pmI thought ProRes 4444 was 12-bit video and 16-bit alpha.
Apple ProRes 4444 supports image sources up to 12 bits and preserves alpha sample depths up to 16 bits. All Apple ProRes 422 codecs support up to 10-bit image sourceThe above is from Apple.

Let us not forget that you do not magically gain bit depth by using a 10 or 12bit codec in post when you shoot 8bits in camera. While the conform between color spaces is vastly improved, unless you are manipulating the original image, most users will not see the difference, it is very noticeable on a vectorscope.
