OK some progress. After I changed some of the values for my prefs inside Final Cut, the com.Apple.FinalCutPro.plist file appeared in my Preferences folder. So that’s good. But I still keep getting the “Settings are corrupt!” message from FCP Rescue. Any ideas? Thanks. –Fred

Shane: I want to try that FCP Rescue app. Unfortunately my G5 isn’t online, so I’ve had to download it to a USB stick and then I will copy it onto the G5. Two elementary questions. First, how do I actually install the app on the G5? Second, should I keep a record of my old prefs or does the app do that for me?
Sorry to bother you. Thanks. Fred -
Hi Walter. Yes, I captured HD-SDI. I just tried the Reconnect Media trick and it didn’t work: I got an error message saying the clip didn’t have the proper content. And yet all I have to do is drag the QT file into the browser and it’s fine.
BTW these tapes originated in an HDX900 and are being played back on a 1200 deck. But they play back fine from the deck.

Thanks Gary. Is there an Easy Setup for 1080/30p? I don’t see that. –Fred

OK I will try that. Yes, I’d like to cut and paste pieces of the 720p video to fill the 1080p canvas without scaling up the 720p. — Fred

Shane, thanks, but then what preset would I use? My Kona 3 card can handle 1080p/59.94, but the only 1080p I see in FCP is 24. I don’t even see 30p, let alone 1080p/59.94.
True, I don’t have the latest FCP. Maybe it has been added?
What I’m hoping to do is mosaic 720p/59.94-originated content on a 1920 x 1080 canvas and keep the 59.94 frame rate — thus ending up with 1080p/59.94. I know that’s an odd format and it’s not easy to figure out how to play it back, but I thought I’d give it a shot. Thanks. –Fred

A follow-up. I still don’t know what caused this problem, but i got around it by duplicating the media files and dragging the copies into the browser. Then they worked fine. –Fred

I’m curious. If this was an HD sequence, would you have to downconvert it to an uncompressed 525 file which you then would send to Compressor, or is there any way you could get Compressor to produce an HD mpeg-2 program stream that you could then mux into an HD transport stream using MPEG Streamclip or similar?
Thanks

C.R. Thanks a lot for your lengthy reply. I can see this is not a simple matter. The irony is that when I told my client it might take a day or two to get this done, she said, “What?? All you have to do is burn a DVD. How hard can that be?”

Walter:
I got it from this post:

This is a little late, but this is an issue I was faced with two years ago when using compressor for a High Def show. The Director of Photography was VERY” upset with the blacks and the gamma when we did our test DVD. We all went round and round with this and finally discovered that when the high def goes to tape it changes the gamma and black levels because in the MAC way of doing things FCP changes the gamma and black levels to match the monitor so that we see it correctly. When it goes to tape those levels are automatically changed. When it goes to DVD IT IS NOT CHANGED and as a result when you play it back on a DVD player and Monitor the gamma and black levels can look very bad. It is even worse with High Def than DV. Only people that know what they are watching for will notice the shift in DV to DVD. After my colorist did the mathematical calculation he changed the gamma and blacks in Final Cut Pro, compressed it using compressor and DVD looks great! I’m surprised that after several years someone else discovered this![Back to Fred] Admittedly I couldn’t quite understand this post. All I’m trying to do is get a decent looking downconverted version of my 720p/60 sequence onto DVD. Could you please quickly tell me the best way of doing this? Many thanks
