  • I can’t trash my prefs

Posted by Fred Grossberg on March 24, 2007 at 3:35 pm

I’ve been trying to trash my prefs to solve a capture problem I posted about yesterday. Here’s the procedure I followed. I quit FCP. I ran FCP Rescue which gave me the following message: “Settings are corrupt! No backup.” I clicked on the Trash button in FCP Rescue. FCP Rescue then said “No settings.” I opened FCP and chose an Easy Setup. Then I closed FCP and ran FCP Rescue, and I got that same error message.

So then I went to User/Library/Preferences and looked for the com.Apple.FinalCutPro.plist file to remove it manually. It wasn’t there, and it wasn’t anywhere on my system. This surprised me since I thought FCP was supposed to create this file automatically. I did find the files Final Cut Pro 5.0 Prefs and Final Cut Obj Cache in the Final Cut Pro User Data folder.

Is the fact that FCP is failing to create the com.Apple.FinalCutPro.plist file the reason that FCP Rescue keeps giving me the error message?

And what can I do about this?

    Thanks for your help. –Fred

OK some progress. After I changed some of the values for my prefs inside Final Cut, the com.Apple.FinalCutPro.plist file appeared in my Preferences folder. So that’s good. But I still keep getting the “Settings are corrupt!” message from FCP Rescue. Any ideas? Thanks. –Fred

Perhaps you have a problem with permissions. Go to applications — utilities — and run Disk Utility, repair disk permissions.

Besides the “com.Apple.FinalCutPro.plist” there is a “Final Cut Pro” folder in your preference folder – have u trashed that?

    Fred,
Is not the .plist that you must trash. As Dave says, go to Users/Library/Preferences. Them you will find a “Final Cut Pro User Data” folder. Inside you will find three files with the FC’s thumbnail:
    – FC pro 5.0 Prefs.
    – FC Pro Obj. Cache.
    – FC Pro Prof Cache.
These are the ones that you have to trash.

Silly question re FCP Rescue- there are separate versions at the site for FCP4 and 5. Are you using the appropriate one?

Yes, thanks for the suggestion. I understand I have to delete all those files.

But one strange thing I do notice about my prefs. I see com.apple.FinalCut Pro.plist and in the Final Cut Pro User Data folder I see Final Cut Pro 5.0 Prefs and Final Cut Pro Obj Cache. But I don’t see Final Cut Pro Prof Cache. Is that last file always supposed to be there, or does FCP only create it when I make a certain change to my preferences inside the program? –Fred

Only on certain changes in the application. It’s almost always there, but there conditions in which it may not have appeared yet. If you’ve been working with the application for a while, and it’s not appearing, there may a different problem with the application, and it may be necessary to reinstall it.

    All the best,

    Tom
