Even though this does not exactly answer the initial question (unlike John’s post thanks to which I’ve learnt something), I personally frequently use the Shift+B command (RAM preview) to quickly check a transition or an effect. Just select a part of the time line, then Shift+B, all frames are computed and stored in RAM, then replayed without any lag.

The total length of preview is conditioned by the value entered in Options>Preferences>Video – Max dynamic RAM preview.

If you are under Windows 7, you might run the task manager (Alt+Ctrl+Esc), and from the Performance tab, open the “Resource Monitor” by clicking the button in the bottom.

From the monitor, you may have a look at CPU, disk I/Os and throughputs, and from there, have an idea of where is the bottleneck.

Having improved my level of knowledge about Cuda, I am very surprised about James’ post. James, if you read us, could you please give more details on what you mean by “it works”?

My concern is that, as far as Cuda starts working (even very little), as one can see during rendering, there is nothing more to do from control panels to enable it. It should either work, or not work at all.

In addition to this, access to Cuda from a program like Vegas is done through a Cuda-specific DLL, which is available (or not) whatever the settings entered in the nVidia control panel.

James, I would love to learn that I am misleading myself, so please let us know your comments 🙂

Hi,

I was also very disappointed after buying a brand new nVidia card, not seeing much improvements with the GPU rendering.

It is very likely that the technical design of the renderer is made in such a way that the GPU power is cut down (and mostly unused) by the cost of transferring data from the mother board to the GPU through the bus.

Hi,

I am alternatively using GPU-Z and EVGA Precision.

On my machine, the GPU-Z window sometimes mysteriously disappears, but the engine keeps running => I have to restart the program, and before, I have to kill the background process, which is quite borying.

For that reason I have switched to EVGA Precision (free tool as well)

Regarding the 8% vs 5% thing, it might be due to the fact that with effects running, the CPU and host memory becomes the bottleneck, causing the GPU to work less efficiently (having to wait for the CPU or the memory to be ready to pass it data).

Hi,

I would also have used saturation. Additionally, cloudy light might not have the right white balance, in which case you might be interested to tune your clip with my White Balance plug-in – see link in signature below.

You might use the Sony AVC plugin to render to MP4, and then select a bitrate (for both audio & video) low enough so that the file fits in an email. You may also shrink the output resolution, as anyway the quality of pictures will be very poor (but this will not change the file size, only determined by the bitrate and the clip duration).

Hi Alf,

In my case, rendering on Premiere Pro CS5 was twice as fast as Vegas Pro 10, for AVC/MP4 outputs. As far as I remember, all 8 cores of my i7 where fully loaded (only 4 with Sony Vegas Pro 10), and the GPU was also quite a bit loaded, as oppposed to Vegas Pro 10.

However, I find the GUI of Premiere Pro much less productive that the one of Vegas for editing tracks, putting clips on the time line, adding transitions and so on, and finally I chose to stay with Sony, considering that an effecient GUI was more time-saving than rendering.

I guess the under-optimality of the Sony rendering is more an issue of the AVC plugin, so maybe Sony might release a new AVC plugin doing more with the GPU (and with the CPU cores).

Interesting…

Could you please specify:
– which format you usually render to?
– what is the format of your input clips?
– which version of Vegas you are using?

I frequently had the kind of problems you describe with Vegas Movie Studio Platinum HD 10, but everything is going fine for me with Vegas Pro 10/64 now (well there are still some crashes from time to time, but they are very very unfrequent).
