Maybe it’s a bit overkill, but I have no better suggestion right now:

– create a VMware virtual machine with a fresh Windows installation on it, and nothing else
– try to install your Vegas setup on it, and see if it works
– if it still does not work, I would definitely suspect the EXE file you have downloaded. I could successfully install Vegas Pro 10 32 and 64 on a Windows 7/64 VMware, and Vegas Pro 10 32 on a Windows XP 32 SP3 VMware, so I know it works.
– if it works, then you might compare your Windows settings to the ones in the VMware. Easier to say than to do…

I remember I had an issue installing Studio Platinum 10 on a XP 32 machine, and this was due to the version of the Windows Installer. Never figured out how to fix that. Maybe you could have a look into that way??

Also, a stupid question: are you sure you have enough disk space for the setup to extract the DAT file successfully?

I personally have the following:

– a MOV project subfolder for clips taken from my EOS 7D camera
– a WAV project subfolder for audio register from my Zoom H4n
– a Renderings project folder for outputs (MP4 in my case)
– and the project file at the root of the project folder.

I was thinking at some point in time that it would be better to have the renderings on a separate hard drive, to optimize rendering times through hard-disk access times. I made different tests with and without this, but I could see no noticeable difference, so I have finally kept the structure described here.

I also keep all my music in a separate hard disk and folder structure, and pick from it when I want to have a music track.

Have you checked that the size of the EXE file corresponds to the one mentioned on the Sony web site?

You might try to re-download — just in case there has been a download error and the EXE file is corrupted?

Many thanks James for this feedback. Actually, meanwhile I have switched to Vegas Pro, and I don’t fully remember what was the outcome of my tests on Platinum. With Vegas Pro, I can see the GPU used at 10-12% when rendering to AVC/MP4 with the Sony AVC plugin.

At the time of my tests I evaluated Premiere Pro, and like you I had to apply the hack you mention to see Premiere Pro work with my GTX460.

What surprises me is that, as far as I remember, GPU CUDA acceleration is only used for AVC rendering in Platinum, so it should not be used during preview (unfortunately). Maybe the 30% workload you see applies to GPU-only, not CUDA (I am not an expert of nVidia cards, but I believe that there are other processing powers than the CUDA cores in a nVidia card).

I am not in front of my NLE PC right now, but I should have the time to make a test of what you recommend, on Vegas Pro tomorrow, and will let you know what I get.

Here is my feedback, after having bought a fresh new PC with i7/950 and a nVidia GTX 460, and upgraded to Vegas Pro 10.

– The GPU is only used for AVC rendering, and I find it quite disappointing. As far as I remember from my tests 1 month ago, the maximum load I could take of the GPU was 10% (while with Premiere Pro, rendering was twice as efficient, with a significantly higher load of the GPU).

– during preview, I can see the 8 cores (or pseudo-cores) running simultaneaously, but in a very irregular way. The overall workload is about 30-40%, with strange peaks during about 10 secondes each, about every 20 seconds (very very roughly). This could be observed on a project with one video track, doing basic transitions between clips, and with one basic FX on clips. No way to get 25fps all time, which means that if the CPU is not used at 100%, the reason is not that the target speed of preview is reached.

I had posted my benchmarks on this forum about 2 months ago, you might have a look for more accurate numbers.

What do you mean by saying nothing shows up?

– what do you have on the timeline after drag-n-dropping a clip in it?
– what do you have in the preview window
– what do you have in the cutting windows (I don’t remember the exact name of this panel, and translate it from the French version… It’s a window where some users can temporarily edit a clip to set the start/end points)

Could you post a screenshot of what you get?

In addition to Codec problems as mentioned earlier, some users also reported the same kind of problems because the have muted all tracks, resulting to a black preview.

Hi,

here are several suggestions to make some tests, in order to give us some feedback to understand the origin of the problems:

1) you might uninstall your OFX plugins, and see if the crashes disappear after that. The explanation is that OFX plugins are DLLs that are loaded at Vegas startup. if you uninstall them they won’t be loaded any more by Vegas, so if there is a crash after uninstall, it means the problem comes from elsewhere.

2) [This test might be dangerous for your project files, don’t do it if you have any doubt]
if you don’t want to uninstall, you may simply temporarily rename the directory where they are installed (one of the following:
– [Vegas Pro install dir]/OFX Video Plug-ins/
– c:/[Program files x64/x86]/Common Files/OFX/
– any directory listed in the OFX_PLUGIN_PATH environment variable

After renaming these directories, restart Vegas — it won’t load your plug-ins — and check if you still have crashes.

Reset your directory names to their original values after the test.

Take care not to save your projects during this test, as you might corrupt your project files.

3) do you have crashes even when the current project does not contain any OFX effects? The OFX plugin DLL functions, except a few ones called at startup/closing, are only called when plugins are actually being used on some clips.

Please tell us the outcome of these tests.

Hi Alf,

Do I understand it right if I say that you are projecting your movie always from the same PC, and that the things which change are the devices you connect to your PC (different screens or projectors)?

If I get you right, then the missing thing might be an ICC profile corresponding to your output device. Maybe you already know all the following, please forgive me if yes.

Colors should be managed at different places in the production chain:

– input device, like what you did with the color balance of your camera

– storage, if you make color operations (like with my white balance plug-in – if you omitted to set the WB when shooting), you have to make sure the color changes are made in the right color space (Adobe, sRGB, …).

– and output. a given “mathematical” colour like (e.g. 220,158,63) stored in the movie file is not rendered the same by all the devices, due to slight electronical components differences. When color accuracy is an issue, adjustement should be done through an ICC profile adapted to each output device. This can usually be specified in the display properties of Windows or in your video card driver. A decent ICC profile of your device model can sometimes be downloaded from the manufacturer web site. Or you can use a calibrating tool, which sends different colors, measures the colors output by your device, compares them back with the input RGB values sent to the device, computes a mathematical transformation so that output actually corresponds to input, after the input has been transformed. This mathematical transformation is then saved to an ICC file, that you can attach to your video card. Hope I am clear enough…

When you say that mainstream movies don’t have the problem, did you try to project them from your PC, and check the output to the screens/projectors you mention?

For photography, my life has changed when I started using ICC profiles to calibrate my screens and printers: I could not have matching colors between both before – and I don’t know this issue any more now 🙂
