    Hi,

I am not very satisfied with the “Sony White Balance” video effect available in Vegas Movie Studio Platinum HD 10.0. Like the equivalent Photoshop Lightroom tool, it let you pick a point on the video where the color is supposed to be white, in order to adjust the whole video accordingly (or photo for Lightroom).

However, the resulting video is quite disappointing, because the colours get very flat and desaturated (whereas Lightroom gives much better results on photos).

So my question is: do you know some kind of plug-in or extension to Platinum HD 10 which gives better results, and which you would recommend? And ideally this plug-in whould have to be free 🙂

    Thanks for your help,
    Frederic

Hmmm, indeed I have just tried the color corrector, and used the left pippet of the right wheel of it, it seems to give good results (as I have read in another thread — sorry, I should have done this before posting…)

So my problem might be fixed. However, should you have any better recommendation, please let me know !! 🙂

It’s best to white balance the camera before shooting, IMHO. Danny

I agree with Frederic. IMHO, FCP does a better of white balance than Vegas, I’ve found. Maybe we (I) should be adding the newer Boris FX? Anyone compare the two/three?

Yah. I would like a tool that more consisely tunes whites (yes I always white balance in the camera), but I recently had an opportunity to set white balance on a taping of a band, which wore white pants onstage (they were a Brazilian act), and I edited it both FCP and Vegas, due to some reasons I’ll not get into, but the FCP balanced video ended up, to my eyes, “better” than the Vegas one. I could not tune the balance as well. I see that Boris has a color balancing tool as part of their Vegas plug ins, and I will probably test it soon. If anyone has experience with it, I’d like to get their input.

You could try Color Fixer Plus in NewBlue Video Essentials.

Thank you all for your suggestions.

I have had a look at these tools. Boris FX is 300$ and New Blue is 80$ 🙁

Nothing FREE that you could recommend ? (well, I agree, setting the color balance before shooting definitely is a free solution, but still, I keep being interested by software solutions as well)

    Hi,

Finding no satisfying offering at an affordable price for my budget, I finally decided to develop my own white balance plug-in, and to make it available on my web site:

    https://fredericbaumann.free.fr/FBMSoftware

There I have put comparative screenshots, a quick-start video guide, and a link to the blog of a video forum moderator who tested it and concluded it is the best white balance tool. Plus a full-featured evaluation version.

Please do not hesitate to give it a try.

here’s another algorithm to get white balance. Works better than color finesse and still keeps the tonal values, plus fully automatic.
