Hard Drive has nothing to do with speeding up the software.
As long as you have a hard drive with 7200 RPM or above you should be fine.
The speed is dependent to Ram and CPU Power.

If you are under Windows 7, you might run the task manager (Alt+Ctrl+Esc), and from the Performance tab, open the “Resource Monitor” by clicking the button in the bottom.

From the monitor, you may have a look at CPU, disk I/Os and throughputs, and from there, have an idea of where is the bottleneck.

While it is certainly the case that the CPU and RAM will probably influence performance more so than anything else, hard drive performance also important and is often over-looked.

Rotational speed( e.g. 7,200, 10,000rpm ) is one of a multitude of factors which influence hard drive performance. Others include access time, buffer memory, platter diameter, platter count, recording technology, data density, and the interface.

My recommended hard drives for video production are:-

Budget – Samsung Spinpoint F3
Mid range – Western Digital VelociRaptor VR200M
High end – Seagate Savvio 15K.2

Personally I use Spinpoint F3 drives because they’re excellent value for money and even out-perform many of the cheaper SSDs!

These days hard drive speed is really a non-issue. I can copy a 1GB file to another location on the same drive in under 7 seconds. I can copy the same file to another drive in under 4 seconds. In either case I have read and written the entire file. Because of read-ahead technology the data our rendering requires (input) is ready to be used before it is needed. Thanks to caching technology the data our rendering produces is written at the convenience of the i/o system, independent of the program (Vegas). When our rendering speeds for a 1GB file are less than 7 seconds then hard drive speed will matter.

Although i wish i was, I’m not a engineer:) but i can say my OS on an SSD is MUCH faster and certain applications tasks are much faster.

Did my SSDs speed up my renders, nope!
Do OS and applications actions happen quicker on my SSD, definitely!
