Possible rendering solution
Posted by Roger Bansemer on December 20, 2010 at 3:53 pmLike everyone, I often get an error message at the end of a render. I have my veg file and clips on one hard drive and often render my finished project to a different hard drive and often I get the error message after hours of rendering.
I am now rendering to the same HD where my project and veg files are stores and haven’t had an error message for several days now.
Not saying this is an answer to rendering problems but it seems to have made a difference in my rendering issues.Dave Haynie replied 15 years, 7 months ago 5 Members · 9 Replies -

December 20, 2010 at 9:42 pmInteresting…
Could you please specify:
– which format you usually render to?
– what is the format of your input clips?
– which version of Vegas you are using?I frequently had the kind of problems you describe with Vegas Movie Studio Platinum HD 10, but everything is going fine for me with Vegas Pro 10/64 now (well there are still some crashes from time to time, but they are very very unfrequent).

December 20, 2010 at 9:53 pmI’ve had the crashes with just about every type of file format. I’ve been rendering huge .mov files of about 80 gigs each and they have all rendered using Vegas 9. If I try and render to another hd on my system, it ofter gets an error message at the end of the render.

I can’t remember the last time Vegas crashed here or gave me an error message.

You’re obviously not using Vegas Pro 10 and any new OpenFX plug-ins. 😉
I’m having rendering problems too with Vegas Pro 10 and Camtasia footage to Sony AVC. Half way through the render it quits with an “unknown error” message. This is with a simple project with one 12 minute Camtasia clip and no edits or FX! Vegas Pro 9 renders the same file without any problems.
I am also still plagued with the “random black frame” problem on Vegas Pro 9.0. No black frame in the source, yet I get a black frame in the render. It is most frustrating!

December 21, 2010 at 3:23 pmI bought v10 the day it was available and not looked back yet. Vegas has been so dependable for me that I never hesitate to upgrade *mid-project*.
Which OpenFx plug-ins are giving you problems? I use NewBlueX plug-ins (which are OpenFX) on practically every project. Never had a mysterious “black frame” and can’t recall the last time Vegas crashed.
I most often produce DVDs, but more of my clients want to see a preview on YouTube, so I have been encoding a lot of Sony AVC for uploading to YouTube.
All project files are on bare SATA drives in a USB2.0 desktop dock.
Worse yet, my editing PC is on the fritz, so I have been doing all this on my Internet-connected general-purpose office PC. (This is one of many advantages of putting my projects on the bare drives).
Which reminds me that I haven’t backed up my PC in a couple of months.

It’s usually when I remove them although sometimes tweaking the FX may cause a crash. I am using some beta software so that could contribute to it although I had Vegas crash 6 or 7 times on me yesterday and all I did was close the trimmer window (I finally learned to stop closing it… lol).
The Black frames where from a straight render with no FX at all. The same file, rendered twice had a black frame in different places and, of course, the source had none. This is using the new Camtasia 64-bit codec so it may be codec related.

December 21, 2010 at 5:12 pmAdmittedly, I don’t use Camtasia (yet).
Your system probably has much more experimental projects on it than I ever will, so it’s not unlikely that you may have installed dll’s along the way that don’t play together nicely.Steve Mann

December 22, 2010 at 8:45 amI’ve seen random black frames in Vegas 10… never in 9. At the time, I was in a serious hurry to get a long render going again (at day away from my rendering PC, it ought to be rendering), so I didn’t spend the time to analyze what was happening. No Camtasia, but I did have a number of .veg files included as video on the timeline. Sources were MXF MPEG-2, MPEG-2-TS AVC, and w64 audio.
And I’ll second the OpenFX crashiness. The big one was a weird interaction. I was using BCC7 ChromaKey, no crash in site. But if I did much pan/crop editing, Vegas would crash when I exited the Pan/Crop dialog (some simple animation for a DVD/Blu-Ray). It took me awhile to start changing things.. I went back to the Sony ChromaKey, and no crash.
But aside this, and the broken Cineform support, I’ve been pretty happy with Vegas 10. But I would never recommend rendering back to the source data drive… that’s just going to slow things down. Of course, many crashes are the result of unexpected race conditions in software state machines.. so it’s actually the case that changing the timing of a render really could eliminate the crash. Chances are, speeding it up somehow might, also.
