There are a lot of good studio monitors available for around $350 a pair. Your best bet would be to go to a music store like a guitar center or sam ash and have a listen to all the different models in that price range and pick the ones you like. M-Audio XB-5’s are a devent small powered set up as are the event systems.

Well I guess I’d have to agree with Rick on this one, as there really is no debate. I would also have to agree with you Walter in the fact that it does work and works well. However my original point was that component output will definitely give you a superior quality image compared to S-video, no doubt about that.

You can either hit Shift+L, or in the top right of the timeline there are 2 buttons. The one on the left turns on linked selection. Make sure it is green.

If you are at the point of accessing the timeline you would already have a project open, no? Are you sure it wont open the project or is it that it wont open a sequence within your project?

I would recommend the Apple Pro Training series, FCP5 by Diana Weynand. It’s what they use for the classes for certification. Very thorough and easy to understand.

The Footage to tape on a HDV camera is compressed at about 25:1. DV is 5:1. Read the specs on the cameras. Some of the new HDV cameras offer HD-SDI out before the DSP which comresses the signal so it will fit on the mini dv tape. If you use this output on the set , you are getting an uncompressed HD signal that you can capture directly to your NLE system.

I hate to burst your bubble here but if you’ve captured the footage to tape in the HDV camera, then you have already applied mpeg 2 compression. Going out the component cable from the camera now is not capturing full uncompressed HD into your NLE system. It is still compressed HDV footage now taking up a lot more hard drive space then it needs to. However if you captured straight from the component out of the camera to your NLE system while shooting, then forget about what I just said, you will indeed have uncompressed footage.

“Well if you have sync problems while editing, you will certainly have sync problems when trying to match the mixed audio back to a print from the negative cut. I am not saying you are going to have sync problems while editing as I dont know if your dat audio was pulled down prior to importing into FCP, that is why I suggested playing a long clip to check for sync. Did you try playing one of your longer clips to see if it stays in sync for the entire length of the clip?
