Regardless of whether you use the P2 card or the mini dv tape you are still going to record video. It is a video camera with audio recording capabilities as well. It is not a stand alone audio recorder. If you want to use the P2 card for the VO’s just set the video portion to DV so you can get more recording time.

A work around could be to use the Aux timecode feature in FCP. You could park the play head at the beginning of a clip and find the corresponding frame on the tape. Use the modify timecode tool and add the TOD timecode from the tape UB onto one of the AUX timceode tracks in FCP.

Keep playing around with the frame offset. I dont have a BM card but with my AJA Io it is sometimes as much as 7 frames.

Not those lines. Go back to FCP menu>system settings>capture scratch tab. At the very bottom of the window there are 3 lines, 2 of wich have a check box next to them. I am not at my FCP system right now so I cant remember the exact dialogue but it’s something like “limit capture now time to…” and “minimum size….” See what those 3 settinngs are.

Check your system settings/scratch disk under the FCP menu and see what you have the 3 bottom lines of the window set to. Post back results.

This may be difficult as most of that hollow sound is probably due to the room acoustics. However having 13 live mics would certainly be compounding the problem. I think the best you could do here is to by some noise gates. You would need one for each mic that could be inserted on each channel. Then you would set the threshold (the level at which the gate will open and close) according to each speakers voice level. That way the gate would close when the speaker is quiet and open automatically when they speak.

Not at all! You can edit quite well without a card and you can also monitor for that matter on the apple display or a dell. The only thing you would need a card and an external HD monitor for is color correction, but that can easily be done at a post facility.

The biggest difference is going to be the fact that the dual cores are PCIe so any cards you buy for them should transfer over to a new machine when the intel desktops come out. The dual processor machine is PCIx, which you can still find plenty of cards for but once you are done with the machine your cards will also be done. By getting the dual core at least you can take some of your hardware into the future.
