  • Which G5 to get?

I’m shopping for a used G5, 2.3Ghz dual processor or higher to run FCP. As far as finding PCI cards and other issues, are the dual core machines as fully supported as the dual processor machines? Right now I’m cutting DV, but want the flexibility to expand if necessary. I can’t wait for the Intel models, and can’t afford a Quad. I’ve found a G5 dual 2.7, and a dual core 2.3 for roughly the same price. Any thought on the dual core/dual processor distinction will be appreciated.

Sure, you can get Fibre Channel, Video cards like the Kona series from AJA for these new machines.

We’re running the Kona 3 and Apple’s Fibre Channel card in our Quad right now.

Thanks, Walter. Are there any significant differences between the dual core and dual processor machines that would warrant buy one used one over the other?

Also check the refurbished page at the Apple Store, sometimes they have good deals.

The biggest difference is going to be the fact that the dual cores are PCIe so any cards you buy for them should transfer over to a new machine when the intel desktops come out. The dual processor machine is PCIx, which you can still find plenty of cards for but once you are done with the machine your cards will also be done. By getting the dual core at least you can take some of your hardware into the future.

Why wouldn’t you wait for intel since the new power macs are coming soon…? unless you need the computer right away and can’t wait till the intel power macs come out, and see how well they work…

In terms of dual proc vs dual core, dual proc at the moment tends to give a bit better performance in parallel processing applications, but dualcore consumes less power, and is in theory better…

Thanks, all, for your quick replies. Now I can make an informed decision. Don’t know what yet, but at least I’m informed.

Does anyone know for sure if cards, like the AJA Kona, will work in the new Intel Power Macs?
