I have the same problem here on a old Decklink Extreme SD card: The Luma level is way too low, and chroma way too hot.

I have to use the proc amp – luma slider to the max and chroma slider to the min to get the component in levels better – it’s almost right but not quite there. SDI capture on the same card is perfect. Component out and SDI out is perfect. PAL – not NTSC.

If you’re even looking at a four drive solution likme this one:

You will see it gets 7.5MB/sec in Raid 0 or raid 5. This would be less than two streams DV, or one stream DV50. Not good.

In general – you get what you pay for. Direct attached storage, connecting a drive direct to Gig-E is not fast enough for video use yet. Not even close.

I’d have to see performance specs on the Lacie drive specifically before commenting on it, but it seems unlikely to work.

ECC ram will not run in a G5 tower. It is meant for servers and will run in the G5XServe.

Let’s take this one at a time:

Yes, and Steve Jobs also said at the WWDC 2003 that he would have 3GHz G5’s out within a year. That should have been May 2004. We’re still waiting. I have a lot of respect for Steve, but occasionally he goes out on a limb and predicts stuff that is impossible for his engineers to accomplish. By the way – he has not said anything specifically about FCP on intel, but it is implied that we can expect FCP to run on Intel eventually if he wants to move his full line of computers to Intel.

The GCD Loop score for the Intel Mac, part of the CPU test, is a respectable 110, compared to dual-2.5GHz G5 Macs that score about 140.”

So there are two issues that would cause me to say that FCP won’t run under Rosetta –
1. It causes a performance slowdown which you can not afford in a CPU intensive app like FCP.
2. It does not do Altivec. Here’s a quote from

Two things – I believe FCP is not optimised to run more than two CPU’s yet – that’s why it does not get close to the boost that photoshop gets in a quad. Apple should release an FCP update to use it better soon.

Lastly – I think your thinking is good – since I think Apple will take a long time to get FCP running on Intel – it will certainly not run using the Rosetta emulator. It will need to be rewritten from scratch to run intel natively, and I would wager that it’s going to take 18 months before that is really stable.

Warning – this is an anti-edit* rant!

Feature 1 : A minimum six second pre-roll on the digisuite LE
Feature 2 : Exceeding real-time RT features forced us to do a mix-down
Feature 3 : Adding dissolves to graphics on layer 2 or 3 did not work

Don’t even get me started on the poor reliability. Compositing on edit* was a nightmare.

We could not even sell our edit*. We started using the hard drives, fans and cables in other edit suites, and eventually gave the IBM intellistation to a schoolboy as a science project example of and older PC…

I’m sooo happy with FCP – I can live without playing picons and running info display while capturing.
