We are using a small program that one of my audio mixers wrote, that launches SanMP on startup, and maps certain drives in read or R/W mode as specified. Saves a lot of time. Interested?

The last thing to try is to trash your FCP preferences, it’s solved a lot of strange problems in the past.

Before I upgraded all our suites from 4 to 5, I installed 5 on a firewire drive to test it first.

Here’s how:
I installed Tiger on the firewire drive – so it was bootable. Then I installed FCP on the boot drive – which was now the external firewire drive.

This ran fine, but every time I moved the firewire drive to another machine and booted off it, I had to re-type the FCP serial number on the first run.

After installation, I could even run FCP 5 when booting off the internal drive – running os X.4.9 and Quicktime 7.

By now I have four systems on FC Studio 5, all on tiger as well.

Or losing 800GB of data because you’re using a two Huge arrays in Raid 0 striped. One drive failed and it was all gone…

I won’t be making that mistake again soon.

You know, it’s what you learn from these stupidities that makes you better. Only problem – there are so many mistakes to make in this industry – even if you make each one only once!

How about playing out a complete 42 minute video to Beta SP 2800 deck, only to find a black tape afterwards – the input selector switch was bumped over from Y,R-Y,B-Y to composite right before the dump.

Or capturing 8 channels of audio from DV with FCP 5’s default settings?

Good call. Just watch out for Raid 0 – I once lost 800GB… Newer cards can do raid 5 at quite usable speeds.

For SD DV I would rather use the two drives seperately:
1. Your datarate needed for SD DV is so low that each drive can handle it easily.
2. You don’t lose any space with different drive sizes.
3. NB NB You double your risk with drive failure, because the raid 0 will lose all data on the Raid of one drive fails (AND THEY DO – ALL DRIVES FAIL EVENTUALLY). With two seperate drives, you lose only the data on the failed drive – the other drive’s data is still fine.
