    Hi Gary

I need to get a process going that can convert a few files per day – every day.

We are actually a FCP shop, but Omneon does not like quicktime files. That’s why I bought the Avid crossgrade – I was hoping it would make it easier to deliver MXF files but it seems like it does not.

Creating a dummy XDCAM folder and exporting one file at a time is not a process that I want to use regularly.

I had a look at Episode Pro and also the high-end Episode Engine and don’t see any mention of MXF. What is the native file format you created for the Grass Valley K2 server? It looks like Flipfactory is the only option left.

    Thanks

    Hi Jason

No, then it is definitely not your CPU or ram….

How did you bring the footage into FCP? Log-and-transfer would normally transcode incoming footage into Apple Prores. If you used the Sony import program you are stuck in their codec. HDV sucks. I would try to transcode overnight – use Media Manager to go to Prores.

    Hope it helps

Try to split the project into smaller parts and export smaller XML files which you import one by one into FCP 6. It seems you have a huge project, and some element is causing the problem. splitting it might allow you to identify the problem.

Always try to break down an insurmountable problem into smaller parts…

I don’t think it is your raid array. You did not specify your CPU or RAM. Are you on a g5?
HDV takes a lot of CPU power to decode and play in real time. I would suspect your CPU of not being fast enough – even the newer Inter machines battle to do HDV.

    XCDAM 420 wrapped in a HDV container…

What is your timeline settings? HDV is always a bugger… I would suggest converting all your HDV to Apple Prores or DVCPRO HD for far better playback performance.

Or place your HDV clips on a Apple Prores timeline and render.

Unfortunately I could not reproduce the problem. I connected the same deck, used the same capture settings. This time the files captured perfectly – no playback or render issues.

But wait, I just realised something. Maybe the footage was shot in interlaced this time, not PSF… I did not check.

I’m getting the deck again for a last time. Will check.

The smallest file captured with the problem is 16GB.

I will have to do some tests. I have exported sections from the timeline, which exhibits the same fault. But I think what happens is that FCP renders the clip at double speed in 25FPS, “baking in” the problem at 25FPS without actually playing at 50fps, like the original captured files do…

The best I can do is to try to re-create the problem on Monday when I get the DVCPRO HD deck again, capture a short clip and post that to you.

    Update:

I did some more tests on these clips: When I have the clips on a native Prores (HQ) timeline, it plays right, at 25 FPS. If I add a color corrector, it will play the color corrector back at 25 FPS in real time, as long as it is not rendered. As soon as I render the timeline, it renders at 50 FPS.

Outside FCP, in quicktime the weirdness continues. The file indicates 25fps, but if you step through it using the right arrow, while watching the TC counter, you see that you step twice for every frame count increment. And you see two new frames on the image for every frame count increment. Very weird.

So the solution was this: We did not have the DVCPRO HD deck anymore and we needed the footage. We connected two FCP suites together, running HDSDI from one to the other. Played out the freaky clips from one suite and captured into the other. Back into the same codec. Apple Prores. Problem gone, except that we could not use deck control, so our newly captured clips’ timecode is wrong.

The only cause I can think of could be the PSF frame structure of the video coming in from the DVCPRO HD deck. This could be causing the decklink driver to be cofused: The capture setting is 1080 50i, but the incoming video is 25psf… which uses a interlaced frame to show progressive images… mmmmm

Mmmmm you just gave me an idea… We actually use LTC to distribute TOD to several studio clocks. Would I be able to get that TOD into a AJA LHe card? Balanced audio?

    Hi Gary

I am capturing a studio’s live program output. I am using AJA Deck Control application to capture. So, no, I am not connected to a deck. And I suppose there would then be no timecode captured.

The erroneous timecode displayed in the UI is still caused by a bug in AJA Deck Control and AJA TV. And both apps display “25 fps” – so they read the correct timecode standard back from the file, but they don’t use it to calculate the current timecode – they use 30 fps.

Regarding Virtual VTR: I spent two weeks trying to get that app stable. Used a G5 and a Mac Pro, internal and fibre SAN, with LSe and LHe capture cards – I could not get it to capture reliably on any combination of hardware. It always dropped frames at different random intervals, while AJA deck control captured flawlessly using the same hardware. I actually bought a copy of the Virtual VTR – I still have the dongle here.

    Thanks for your input

    Hi Gary

Do you know of any other simple program that can do this? Maybe Final Cut Express? Would it show correct 25fps timecode in the UI?

    Thanks
