  • RAM Question for FCP 5

Posted by Hopperhd on December 29, 2005 at 10:12 pm

    I’m looking at purchasing a New – Dual 2.3GHz G5 2GB of RAM FCP 5.

    Question:

What is the difference between the different types of RAM?

    2G 533 DDR2 Non ECC SDRAM –
    4×512
    2x1GB

    2G 533 DDR2 ECC SDRAM –
    4×512
    2x1GB

What is the difference between Non ECC and ECC? And out of the combinations listed, what is the best se-up for FCP 5 and what is the best RAM size distribution?

    Thanks,
    Jason

EEC RAM is slightly sower. You don’t need it for video.
For a thorough explanation, just google the RAM numbers. The descriptions are ever so boring.

This is my standard sigfile so do not take it personally: “For crying out loud, read the freakin’ manual.”

I still need the most ideal configuration for FCP 5, based on the available choices:

    G5 RAM Question:

    2G 533 DDR2 Non ECC SDRAM –
    4×512
    2x1GB

    2G 533 DDR2 ECC SDRAM –
    4×512
    2x1GB

    Thanks again,
    Jason

Go with the 1 Gb sticks. It gives much more room when you eventually want to fill the rest of the slots. (And one day you will, I promise!).

Go non ECC. Wether one is faster than the other is (acording to BareFeats.com) a latency issue. You can have faster and slover versions of both. But for non critical apps (which FCP is considered to be in comparison with a nuclear research app)non ECC is the way to go.

ECC ram will not run in a G5 tower. It is meant for servers and will run in the G5XServe.
