I’m working off your still frame, so it’s not as good as it could be.
You have to take your time and be more precise with the masking points. I know. It’s tedious but the result will be so much better !
To avoid seing any of the background image behind your subject, use the same picture grab and do some creative contour erase with Photoshop or equivalent.
And this is what it should look like when done.

I will assume here that you are not fluent in keyframing.
You will be working strictly off the Event Pan/Crop window.
Keyframes are represented by this symbol:
You can add as many as you want. The one with the green + will add a keyframe and the one with a red x will delete a keyframe. The more keyframes, the more fluid is your movement. ….also more time consuming !
The object is to keep your back subject behind your cut-out at all times. Move your cursor on the timeline just a few frames. Add a keyframe. Re-size and re-position your box. Keep going until you get the desired effect.

In my previous post look at the Event Pan/Crop picture.
You may have to keyframe the box in your still as you go along in order to properly mask the image behind.
I would also add a smidge of blurriness around your forefront subject, not much, just enough to make the cutout more believable .

It would be preferable to find out first why your renders crash. It could be a lot of different reasons not directly related to Vegas. More often than not, it’s a combination of factors.
Look at all of your hardware and what software that you have. Things like Klite for example will screw things up big time.

It’s pretty much as described before. You may want to work off a separate instance of Vegas for this and add the rendered result to your main edit. Don’t have to, but easier to keep track of things.
If you look at the screen capture of the Timeline, I’ve used 3 tracks.
Create 3 Video Tracks
Insert your main video in track 2. If you need to do any adjustments to your clip, now’s the time to do it. If you don’t, you’ll have to start the whole process all over again since you will need to take a snapshot at your FX point.Track 1 is the Snapshot taken off of track 2 at the maker point named Freeze point. Use a Marker to match your snapshot with the same frame on track 2
Add the Snapshot to track 1 and 3 at marker point.
In track 1 only (don’t you dare do anything to track 3…yet) go to Event Pan/Crop and add your in and out keyframes. On the second keyframe, adjust your box to your liking. You may have to go back to it later to do some fine tuning so that you can’t see the edges of the clip under it. Right click your keyframes and change Linear to Smooth.
Adjust the lenght of track 3 to match track 1.

At this point, you should be a happy camper.

Is this the effect you were looking for ? Like I said before, cheap and dirty. Don’t forget to right click on your first key frame and change it from Linear to Smooth.

Cheap and dirty way to do it is to have 2 video tracks. You have to capture the frame where you want the effect to start. Make a PNG out of it. Add your masked subject to the top track at the point on the bottom track where you want the effect to start . The bottom one has the complete unmasked one. Top track, left panel, go to Track Motion and Keyframe your zoom in to your liking.
Voila !
I could do a demo for you a little later (after I wrap up my gear)
