Is there any any font and size that would be recommended to use for subtitles in a movie.

Everyone seems to say that it depends on personal taste but my taste could be completely wrong so I need a bit of help in deciding.

I have a feature movie which is edited with Vegas pro 12 and am using what was recommended mostly on the web and that is Verdana bold font. However I think that my font size of 14 with shadow could be a bit large and distract from the viewing.I also don’t want to go too small.

Another movie I edited on Vegas pro 10 and used default Verdana bold 24 but am not sure if this also could be a bit large.

The subtitles have been created using Plain SONY Sample Text.

I use Arial 14 pt. that I make Bold in the titler.

I must say Arial 14pt. bold does not look bad in my opinion.

I have not yet submitted the movie so there is still time to change.Would you say when comparing the two that Verdana 14pt. bold is definitely too distracting on the screen?

The reason I used Verdana is that I was told it is an easy font to read on screen but somehow it seems a bit overpowering.

I prefer Arial because it’s a nice simple font and doesn’t distract from anything like I found Verdana did.

Thanks Mike for your preference I fully agree.

It just means I will have to sit down and change all the font sizes one by one for the entire movie.Wish there was an easier way but there isn’t but at least I don’t have to change anything else.

Helvetica is the industry standard. Of course, Arial is a rip off of Helvetica.

Helvetica is the perfect font. They made a documentary about it’s perfection, that’s just how perfect it is. True not kiddin.

I guess size is somewhere around 14-16.

    N-joy

    font doc.

I wrote two in-depth articles about subtitle fonts and font sizes which should help the people who come across this thread (and perhaps the topic starter, if they still care).

    Hi Max

Hats off to you for those articles Sir !!!

Informative, very well written, to the point and a pleasure to read.

Now I have something to send to those clients that argue about wanting Comic Sans MS as subtitles…

    3 Cheers !
