Everything depends on what you want to do and what you want to have in the end. For example, the Canon XH-A1 (came out in 2006) will give you 1440 × 1080 4:2:0 from the Firewire output and the BNC SD out.
However, there is a cable that came with the XH-A1 for the component output. Using it via the D Connector into an HDMI converter, it will allow 1920x1080i uncompressed providing that you use something along the likes of a Atomos Ninja 2 (or other similar recorder) and a Component to HDMI converter to record. Make sure you don’t get the device for laptops to, say, an older projector with no HDMI input.
The advantage of all of this is that the price for these older camcorders, and other devices out there in the used equipment market, are ridiculously low.
Make sure that everything meets the specs and if you can, do a test record run before you buy.
Now, if Blue Voodoo means something personal to you, there are a couple of places near by your place that can help you out. If not, then I’ve got the wrong J-P.

From what I understand about the XAVC-S codec ( I’m more into the broadcasting end of things and this is not a broadcast worthy codec ) it’s basically a H264 that will give you up to 3840×2160 in 4:2:0 at 8 bit. The advantage of this codec is that you get a smaller size file. On the negative side you get a file that will degrade a bit more throughout your generations. Also, you need to have a bit more computing power to process the files and there is no metadata. Could be that when adding your FXs the strain on your computer is just to much. Now, you mentioned that when you render those parts separately you don’t get that ”blackout” effect. That may be the reason why. You may have to work on those parts as ”stand alone” entities. This is actually my preferred workflow since I can send a ”finish” segment for approval or special FXs or colourization work.
Maybe someone here has a workaround handy up their sleeve.

Like: What type of files you’re using, a list of the plugins used, would be nice to have screen grabs of your time line(s), of your render specs, etc…
The more info we have, the better chances you’ll have of getting the right answer(s).

First off, try as much as possible to stay away from MP3s. It’s a lossy format. Compression can be anywhere from 75 to 90%. Not much quality there. Every time you use a compressed file, audio or video, you add to the possibility of having problems depending on you setup.
When you re-installed, did you add any outside plug-ins like K-lite Codec Pack or anything else along the same line ?
Would be nice to have a Mediainfo on one of your problematic MP3 files. Here’s the link if you don’t have Mediainfo

My advice is to download the trial version, try it out before buying it. Have a go at it. Then you can make an enlighten decision.

There are many different ”types” of files that can be in the .MP4 container. The container format is based on the Apple Quicktime format, also known as .MOV
Take a look at the the links below. I know, it’s a smidge technical but well worth the read.

When one realizes (as I did a while back) that containers such as .MP4s are just that, containers, you stop taking files at face value.

I can only speak for myself but being a Vegas user since Version 3, I would say that 99% of the problems I had were mostly due to weird, odd or bad original video files. Most of those were from either screen recording software, phones with non standard frame rates, etc.
Now, I’m not saying that Vegas is perfect. No software is. I come from a broadcasting background and we were using Avid. It to had glitches. I have friends that use most of the other popular editing software and they also experience the odd problem on occasion.
That’s my take on it. My advice is to try as much as possible to start your project with a proper video, audio, picture file and it should be smooth sailing for you.
