  • As a workaround::

you can extract the Z-depth to greyscale values, precompose that and feed it into a filter that uses greyscales to Blur selectively.
There’s a third party-filter somewhere called Rack-focus that does that.
I’m sure there are some Lensblur filters out there with the same functionality

After Effects comes with ‘Compound blur’, which does not use a “centered Focus point” like rack focus, it always blurs 0 pixels at black, max pixels at white (or vice versa), but you cannot say : “don’t blur at 50% grey, but do blur at 0% black and 100% white”

The workaround for that would be to create a “solarized’ greyscale map.
I’ve created an example-project that does that, with two depth matte filters, and a channel combiner to turn the alpha-matte into a greyscale.

It uses a few sliders and expressions to make the process easier to control, but they’re not really necessary.
You get sliders for “Focal Plane”, “Focal Thickness” and “Focal plane feather”

    Don’t know that commercial,

but there are a few text-animation-presets you might want to check out:

Chaotic, Chaotic 2, Fluorescent Light, Quiver, fish bait, wheatfield, wiggly scale, Spasm

  • Maybe \r will work instead of \n, not sure though.

Judging by the documentation, Auto-orient seems to be a feature they forgot to implementy in the Object-Model.
You might want to try adding an expression that mimics the Auto-orient behaviour.

Definitely use Motion tile, it has Motion blur built-in, just enable the layer’s and comp’s motion blur switches and it’s there.
Use “Tile Center” to animate, not the layer’s position.

You might use an expression to tie together the “Tile Height” and “Tile Width”-parameters so they stay in the same aspect and you only need to key-frame on of them.
Simple pick-whipping should do the trick to get something ike this for Tile Height= effect("Motion Tile")("Tile Width")

  • Try adding an adjustment layer that Gaussian Blurs 2 pixels, but set it’s transfer mode to “color”.

Do a test-render to DV with that, in theory DV only has limited resolution in the chroma, not the luminance-domain, so there’s no need to blur that.

2 pixels seems about right to me, since chroma has half the resolution, but experiment to get the best value.

Can you post an excerpt from the txt-file ?
Dependeing on how easy it is to interpret tha, it should be do-able.

I’ll take a look at it later. Off to the studio now. So I won’t reply immediately.

I guess it’s how we interpret flickering.

Even with Field rendering, you can still get that slight creeping anti-aliasing error if you don’t blur slightly. Especially when you’re moving text vertically.
You do get rid of jittery or blocky horizontal motion with field-rendering though.
    Having Motion-Blur on helps too.
