I agree, we’re kind of in twilight zone. On the other hand, if money is no problem for you, you might take a look at this model: Two 2.4GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon “Westmere” (8 cores). This is my weapon of choice.

My point is there is no reason to pay through your nose on a 12-core tower with wishful thinking that some day it’ll be able to work in full capacity. Comparative charts show beyond reasonable doubt that a difference in output between 12-core and 8-core tower is meager to say the least. Let me put it this way. Suppose you have fancy sports car, ferrari, but you can’t drive it faster than 60 MPH because higher octane gas, it requires to fire up its engine to full blast, has yet to come on some unspecified date in future as developers try to wrap their heads around some more pressing problems, namely new iPhone. Ridiculous. I prefer to pay fair price for a product capable of delivering on what was promised now, not tomorrow.

Yep I recall the same kind of talk about hyper-threading, and new CPUs, and new apps to take advantage of that. It was Windows and Intel kind of talk but essence is likewise. It was available for developers for years. A number of generations of software were gone and yet it seemed no one could bridled the raw power for full extend. How many generations of CPUs did Apple use since 2006? How many generations of software did they sell? In terms of utilizing of multi-core capacity Apple is far beyond Adobe which have never been a hardware company. Do you still believe that one day you’d be able to load effectively all 12 hundred cores of new tower? I hate to rain on your parade but it’s myth, blatant marketing lies, urban legend to squeeze every penny off you.

There is no winner in running towards the bottom. I’d never have faith in all that BS I was to read in textbooks on companies that serve THE customers and expand because they, the people, reciprocate with buck and thus validate their marketing strategy. I’m laughing on reminiscing all those case studies about staunch entrepreneurs working hard from their garages to earn loyalty of their customers and produce the best product for them. The last bastion of capitalism is crushing down unveiling its ugly face. BTW, I’m not into HP, never was. I never was an Apple freak, either, but I know lots of people who were there onset and they kinda were starting showing signs of deep disillusionment during the last couple of years and felt betrayed. They kept Apple finically afloat all those years and now what they got in return? They were discarded because now, all of a sudden, Apple got deep pockets and can handle on its own. Bravo. I don’t give a @#$% what is written in their TOS. I pissed off because their abrupt change in attitude will eventually cost me a buck and I’d rather spend it on something else.

Try to use ProRes codecs for all editing purposes unless you have to work w/ files coming straight from camera. Conventional wisdom is to capture HDV as is but change sequence codec to ProRes. It’s more productive had you to mix video w/ different resolution if they’d all ProRes files.

That’s some feature of Lion I’ve to put up to for sometime now. The only solution I could came up with is close (command w) any document in any program before quitting it. This way next time you open application there are no previous projects/files popping up.

Resize all stills to match SD sequence (PAL? NTSC? Anamorphic?). Don’t forget to make them 72 dpi. Launch FCP, in User Prefs set Still duration to 1 frame or use different duration that’s deemed to fit your artistic vision. Import Stills folder in FCP and drag and drop it in timeline. That’s it in a nut shell.

Try to read it on Windows for it’s much more forgiving in this regard.

There is a special type of cleaning cassette you need to use. No rocket science – just load it and play for 15 sec. Read instruction on tape carefully before proceeding. There is a 50/50 chance to rescue all the footage. Success depends on whose fault it is. If it’s cassette you’re in trouble.
No one can give you a guarantee that nothing like that would ever happen to you if only you used this or that brand of MiniDV cassette. They all prone to malfunction due to the very nature of the medium. You mentioned Italy. I guess you had to get thru customs. You’d be surprised what X-ray exposure could do to tape.
