You are correct about the 552 and tc. You can use a lockit or an external syncbox that gets jammed from the master clock. Let the sync pros on the shoot set you up with the tc & frame rates.

Obviously you don’t work in the event video market where taping a mic to a speaker is always the fall back position. It’s better than nothing and when used with what the camera mic picks up is more than acceptable for wedding, party, etc videos.

The new Behringer x32 series or Soundcraft Expression digital boards might be what you’re looking for. Both around $2500 or so.

Tape a wireless TX & mic to a PA speaker set the level and be done with it in those instances.

I would suggest that you try other sources both mic and line level to see if you get the same results. Also try the Rode mic into another mixer/recorder just to eliminate any problem with it.

The real question is why would you need anything hotter than -6dbfs? If you really want/need the tracks to be hotter then boost them in post.

For your use the H2N will work just fine. I know many event videographers who use the same format with no problems. OTOH they all use the cheapest lav they can find with acceptable results. You might want to check Radio Shack for low priced lav mics.
