September 15, 2014 at 9:46 pm in reply to: Is the Canon 7D mark II Dead on Arrival?I agree with Christopher. I own a 7D (& a 60D) w/Magic Lantern and I’m underwhelmed from a Video standpoint. The 7D Mk2 is a good update (great Auto-Focus) 4 Action/Wildlife Photographers but not for Videographers or other Creatives wanting a flexible Photo/Video Hybrid IMHO. The original 7D was revolutionary 5yrs ago from a Video standpoint & became very popular with DP’s as a B/C Cam. This is an evolutionary product…not much there for Video other than 60p and incremental ISO improvements. I think the 70D is a more flexible Hybrid with flip-out touchscreen LCD that can rack-focus and Wi-Fi, or for about the same price you can get the full-frame 6D for 2 stops better low-light, Wi-Fi & Magic Lantern for zebras & focus peaking. The Panasonic GH4, Sony A7s and now Samsung NX1 all do 4K which produce stunning HD video when down-rezzed to 1080p and the ability to crop & pan-&-scan in post. The new Nikon D750 is going to have way better DR/IQ & low-light and has a tilt screen & Wi-Fi. I’ll be sticking with my 7D & 60D w/Magic Lantern for now and maybe add a GH4 for 4k Video &/or FZ1000 (FW update enables 24p & 4k Photo mode) for concert/performance videos unless something better comes along before Christmas.

Premiere doesn’t have any build-in NR ala Neat but you can send a clip/seq to After Effects and use AE’s Remove Grain FX…I’ve had great results with it.

Laptops with original ThunderboltJust had a conversation with Dave Helmly about this, and while the PCIe Thunderbolt card does feature Displayport IN as per Intel’s Thunderbolt specs, it’s not required to be connected – unless you want the video looped through.

I also own/use the Audio Technica ATH-M50’s & Sony MDR 7506 and highly recommend them. The Sony’s I’ve had for a dozen years and are great for dialog editing. The AT’s are great for checking mixes and have a better overall balance IMHO. YMMV.

Automatic Duck news
September 26, 2011
Greetings!
I’m writing you today to share with you some exciting news regarding Automatic Duck.Over these many years we’ve enjoyed improving the interchange between Avid, Final Cut Pro, After Effects, Pro Tools, Smoke, Quantel and other AAF and OMF-friendly apps, and now we’re thrilled to announce that Automatic Duck has partnered with Adobe Systems to bring that same interchange functionality to Premiere. To that end I have joined the Adobe Product Marketing team and am really excited about their products both today and new things yet to be released. Harry Plate (my Dad and the co-Founder of Automatic Duck) will be assisting with the technology integration while continuing to focus on supporting other Automatic Duck partners.
We view our partnership with an Adobe as a great opportunity for our customers, as we will finally be able to offer the same best-in-class quality translation interface for Premiere as we have offered in the past for other video editing products, enabling customers to seamlessly move in and out of Premiere in their editing/processing workflows.
Harry and I are currently working out the details of a new Automatic Duck web site where our customers will be able to find all of the Automatic Duck products and related information, so please stay tuned!
– Wes Plate, co-founder of Automatic Duck

September 13, 2011 at 5:24 pm in reply to: Adobe Premiere Pro CS5.5 (5.5.1) update: bug fixes, Mac OSX v10.7 (Lion) compatibilityI’m also waiting for Adobe to fix the Nikon issue before switching. That said, I also appreciate the excellent communication here and on the Adobe Premiere FaceBook page. The fact that Adobe is listening, issuing bug fixes, working w/3rd Party vendors, and aquiring assets that will make their way into their Video App’s suite is very encouraging.
P.S. Would love to see Adobe include Muse in their next PP package.

September 9, 2011 at 11:38 pm in reply to: waves z-noise — where is it in Soundtrack?Try re-installing the Z-Noise plug-In…it should show up in the STP Effects palete along with and other 3rd Party AU plug-ins. Otherwise, give Waves Tech Support a call…they’re usually pretty responsive. Cheers.

September 9, 2011 at 8:14 pm in reply to: waves z-noise — where is it in Soundtrack?Z-Noise is a AU Plug-In, not a Stand Alone Application like Izotope RX. In STP, go your Effects pane and scroll to the bottom of the Category tab…there should be a Waves folder w/Z-Noise in it. Click to open/activate. You can also use it within any DAW; Logic, Pro Tools, Cubase/Nuendo &/or DP. There should also be a Waves folder within your Applcations and an WaveShell AU Component under Library_Audio_Plug-Ins_Components.

The Media Composer 5 – 5.5 Upgrade was $149 (download) or $395 (boxed)…very reasonable IMO. That said, you do have to pay a lot extra for some of the cool add-ons like PhraseFind & ScriptSync. By contrast, Adobe is charging $179 for Premiere 5-5.5 or $399 for Production Premium 5-5.5 upgrades. Really hoping the expanded 3rd Party I/O support comes before Sept. 30th.

Actually it’s now called Adobe Media Encoder (AME) and it not only does Flash but H.264 and can transcode to ProRes or whatever codecs are on your system (DNxHD etc.). And it’s 64-bit & cross-platform (unlike Compesssor 4). Now if Adobe would just take a leaf out of Avid’s book and provide both Mac & PC versions to FCP switchers & improve a few things in a point update (monitoring, fcp xml translation, color tools etc.) I’d be sold. I was leaning towards renting to begin with but the $400 offer is pretty compelling & perhaps I’ll update to Prod. Premium when V6 drops. Would love to see a Premiere Pro + Photoshop Ext. bundle for say $600. And if Avid opens up their hardware support for MC 5.5 to all vendors I may just get both. Cheers!
