OK, so I just downloaded the Media Composer 30 day free trial and will begin to start learning it this weekend.

As a FCP user I’ll qualify for the $995 cross grade if I choose to add MC to my toolset. But, what might I expect to pay to upgrade to MC6 once it hits the market?

Any ballpark figures out there? Thanks…

There’s no telling. Upgrade pricing has varied from 149 to 699 over the last three years, IIRC.

I expect Avid to respond like they want some of that market share they handed to FCP back. If not, it’ll all go to adobe.
Looking forward to their response to FCP’s fold. I would have thought that would have happened weeks ago.

There’s been a $995 crossgrade promotion since before Apple showed FCP X at NAB. There was also an event in LA this past week with sneak peek of features and functionality being “considered” for MC v6. Check links farther down in this forum.

    Thanks, Michael.

I’ve read the threads and am aware of the crossgrade promotion. I was just trying to get a general handle on what I might be able to expect to pay in upgrade costs in the future if I decided to add MC to my set of tools.

My past experience with Avid, albeit somewhat limited, has been that it has been a relatively expensive pay as you go model once you factor in upgrades and their support fees.

The Media Composer 5 – 5.5 Upgrade was $149 (download) or $395 (boxed)…very reasonable IMO. That said, you do have to pay a lot extra for some of the cool add-ons like PhraseFind & ScriptSync. By contrast, Adobe is charging $179 for Premiere 5-5.5 or $399 for Production Premium 5-5.5 upgrades. Really hoping the expanded 3rd Party I/O support comes before Sept. 30th.

Also note that support is not required. Most software-only customers do quite well without any need for official support, because the user help is so great on the various online forums, including the Avid Community Forums. I think there’s 1 free support call allowed with a new purchase and after that you can go on a per-incident call basis if you really need technical help. I think installation and activation issues are covered for free. The people who really need support are the ones with more advanced turnkey systems and Avid ISIS or Unity shared storage.
