For what it’s worth, there is also a dupe-detection feature on the timeline – if you use the same clip more than once in a timeline, FCP will underline the duped portion of the clip in red on the timeline.

The way I see it Steve867, you have two options:

1 – Letterbox the entire cut. Use a 4:3 sequence, arc the 16:9 to letterbox format, and crop the 4:3 at the top and bottom with black to give it a 16:9 look

or

2 – Scale your 4:3 shots up until you fill a 16:9 sequence.

Neither is ideal, but unfortunately there isn’t much you can do to really “convert”.

Actually, s third option I sometimes use when the above two are not suitable and I need to get rid of the black bars at the sides is to place the 4:3 shot into a 16:9 sequence twice, one directly above the other. Crop the black bars out of the top layer (feather the edges a bit), and then stretch the bottom layer horizontally to fill the width of the 16:9 sequence. Blur the bottom layer, and you can create a nice look – but it’s certainly not suitable for all types of footage or cuts.

Not that I use iDVD, but it sounds like the likely culprit to me. Can you turn up the bitrate in iDVD? If so, something like 8Mbps CBR will give you the best result you’re probably gonna get…

Do you have DVD Studo Pro and Compressor? It will give you more control over the encoding process…

If you have a need to ingest footage from a source other than DV or at a higher quality, you’ll want a capture card. For example, if you wanted to do uncompressed SD for broadcast, you’d want a Blackmagic or Kona card that will give you SDI inputs. Some have degrees of Hardware Acceleration features, but they are principally I/O devices.

The general feeling out there is that it’s unnecessary. There are no known viruses for the Mac, but that’s not to say there never will be. Mac can “carry” viruses in infected files, but AFAIK cannot be infected – Macs don’t run PC executables.

I don’t run any virus protection on my PB, which I use to go online, but having said that I also take the precaution of not going online with my main G5 edit suite other than for updates.

Couldn’t tell you how any software will interefere with general program operation, but I do hear that NAV can sometimes get in the way.

You will need to convert your PAL stuff to NTSC. You will need something like along these lines:

There’s a bunch out there – perhaps someone else on the forum can recommend some good ones. I don’t use standards conversion much myself, but I have been happy with the stuff I have purchased from Nattress in the past.

As for your 16×9 footage… The stretch is actually the “correct” way of getting 16×9 to tape. The anamorphic stretch is corrected upon playback to the correct aspect ratio. If you want to letterbox your image when putting it down to tape, you can make a new sequence which is 4×3, and then drop your 16×9 cut into that sequence – FCP will automatically arc the cut and letterbox it. Put that down to tape.
