    Hi Chris,

    Im actually doing something similar and have the same dilemma;

    Option 1
    • comp and add footage in c4d, works and allows footage to be curved over surfaces, in reflections etc but not as quick and versatile as in AE

    Option 2
    • export camera data etc to AE from C4D and retain more flexibility to edit/change footage etc but footage cant be used to interact with your 3D elements in quite the same way….

In the end AE is not really a 3d application and so cant map over curved surfaces in the way you describe…

If you just need a subtle warp or bend then you may be able to fake it using mesh warps or plug-ins but that could be a real headache…

thanks randy – that gives me plenty more to get on with…

since i have you can i sneak in 2 more quick ones:

    • if i take a primitive then deform it, then stick it in a cloner object it reverts to the default shape, even if ive made it editable… :S is this normal? how do i get around this?

    • is there a quick way to swap primitives; ie a cube for a sphere etc…

    • and one more just to push my luck! in c4d, and 3d in general – does size matter? i mean if im making a scene with “large” real world objects should i make these objects larger? Im thinking at some level, that as long as relative sizes are accurate, then it doesnt matter – but then I wonder if the camera optics mean that the size does matter?

thanks again 4 all ur help, im sure ill be back for more, but ill do my best 🙂

    thanks Randy, thats helpful..

I think i shall probably lave

Can anyone tell me more Re. actually drawing splines/sticking objects on the surface of a primitive… so that i can align & animate objects on the surface of my globe…

ok, i can see this is an old post – but had a similar issue; solution was that i hadnt defined a value for grow bounds (im using RGS grow bounds) – u cant just drag and drop it… you have to define a value for how far the effect will be extended…

    No probs Evan

Bear in mind that Squarespace is simply a platform – the great examples there come from great designers – but at least youre paying for great design and not countless content specs, wireframes, custom coding, revisions…

Regards the “format”, well any decent designer with half a brain and a notion of dtp should be able to get their head around the tools…

…id add its not perfect, there some occasional bugs etc, but they are fairly minor and the support is quick and efficient…

…and i see soon you can even update content from iphone 😉

    Hmmmm,

Well “You” are free to hire who you like to do the legwork, in a sense thats not the point; Im talking about the framework you use to get the job done. Of course one way or another you will have to plan your content, structure your site, but you dont need to go about spending 2/3rds of your budget on re-inventing the web design wheel… Its about maximizing the positive and minimizing the overheads…

I also disagree, and in fact mildly amusing, your deterministic view of the world; the idea that “web designers are here for a reason”, as if they owe their existence to a divine creator…

Core design skills will always be indispensable and many of the principals behind good design may remain largely unchanged, but the tools they use will change and modernize to become more user friendly, cost effective, efficient…

I dont think the FCP analogy fits here, other than to support my point; the craft of editing is timeless, but the tools change..

    Ho hum :s
