Just below this post is Simon Ubsdell’s powerful and flexible “Adjustable Frame Effect” which will allow you to create multi layers of images in their own “frames”, which is what you’re trying to do (if I understand you correctly). Simon’s effect is easy to apply.

Simon, you’re right, if I drag on the “numerical control” of the border, it goes to zero, but the slider doesn’t–it only goes to 1. I tried to get the “bleed” again, but it’s not there… I may have done something weird before.

Robbert-Jan van der Does’s “Multi-Gradient Blur” filter, at the top of this forum, has nice on-screen controls for the blur control… works beautifully.

And yes… this IS the most useful implementation of split screen–allowing full control. Now, if FCP X allowed simple dragging of individual filters (that have been already set) to other clips, it would make the process easier (the “Paste Effects” is too global).

    Thanks again.

    Best,
    Eli

    Robbert-Jan,

Thank you for this great tool!

This is a creative and clever implementation of a selective blur filter. I truly like and appreciate the on-screen controls and the fact that it’s on a title layer, enable me to make quick changes. Also, placing more than one “title” effect on a clip allows the stacking of more than one blur effect on a clip, creating a very natural “shallow depth of field” effect that works convincingly.

    Thank you.

Simon, this is great… Thank you.

A suggestion… can you add a check box to turn off the border, or let the border control go down to zero. Also, it looks like the image shows (bleeds) through between the border and the edge of the “adjusted frame.” I am editing some DVCPRO HD 720p. (I realize that the bleed between the border and the edge of the frame may not show up in other video formats).

(Also, is there a way in Motion to to actual on-screen dragging control, as opposed to sliders and “X,Y” positions, etc.?)

This is a perfect tool for creating complex split screens and being able to edit images within each screen.

I am very thankful to you and to Brendan for enriching our (peaceful) arsenal.

    Best,
    Eli

Yes, I know… It’s a shame to misspell “misspell,” not to mention “mispelt”!!!!!

Brendan, another great filter. This one I’ll be using often.

(The only trouble with this filter is that you misspell “color”. :))))

    Thanks,

    Simon,

Thank you… this is really amazing… makes life easier (I have a project with some split-screens). I really like the flexibility of repositioning, etc..

I looked at it in Motion, and it’s a little out of my range at this point, but I’m trying to catch up with you Motion whizzes.

I know I’m pushing your kindness, Simon, but how difficult would it be to create a four way option (two on top, two on bottom) and six way (3-top, 3-bottom). Also, I notice the border control only moves the right screen, rather than from both sides (making it the border off-center); how easy is that to fix.

Again, I am deeply appreciative. Thank you.

Brendan and Mark, thank you. I am just getting into Motion, and that generator solution sounds great, especially if it will let you reposition the video.

Brendan, thanks for your offer–it will be great if you could mock soothing up if you have the time, as I am don’t know how to make a drop zones yet, but I can see how that would be a big (and flexible) time saver.

I can then see that it’s possible to make several permutations of this that could be very useful (if you need split screens, that is).

Thanks for your input and suggestions.

    Thanks for your suggestions, Rick.

Of course cropping is a quick and dirty solution, but you can’t reframe the image (or substitute) within the crop without messing up the alignment of your split (unless I’m missing something).

Also, eyeballing and cropping won’t line up if you’re doing a lot of cutting and re-framing (or resizing the image withou changing the border of the split).

Also, what I outline above is of course extensible and flexible, limited by the the number and shape of the masks and the associated videos.

I’ve been experimenting successfully with generating templates in motion that are pre-set for various borders and shapes.
