One thing you can always do is go to File – Properties, click on the little folder icon to the right of the template (tool tip is “Match Media Settings”), pick the file you captured, and then it will match your project settings to the file you captured from your camera.
As for what the various settings mean, click on the “?” on the properties title bar and then click on any field. I did this with the “field order” field and it opened the help file for the File – Properties. Clicking on “Video” (since I was looking at the video tab) tells you what all of those various settings do.

Change to the selection icon, select them all, and you can then see the outlines and find what’s overlapping.

On my first XP machine I also turned it off – until I needed it. Since then I’ve left it on on all new machines and have not regretted it as I have had to use it a few times.
Here’s what I might try first: MOVE those font files to a different folder on your hard drive. Then go into the fonts control panel and “ADD” these fonts back in.

You might try holding CTRL-SHIFT when starting Vegas which will reset it back to factory defaults. You’ll then have to re-make the preference changes you’ve made since then.

Scripting is another unique feature in Vegas. You can write scripts that will automate repetitive tasks and even add new features to Vegas. Make sure you check out the various scripts available if you choose to try Vegas.

Did you try a system restore to an earlier point? I can see installing Vegas not changing anything because it isn’t Vegas that changed – it’s your system that changed. I’d try the system restore first. Otherwise, it’s your system you’re going to have to fix.
If you have “large fonts” chosen in your display settings, you might also try changing that to normal.

It would be best if the shot is locked down and the TV does not move. Then I’d use the masking in Pan/Crop to mask out the TV area and then put whatever footage I wanted on the TV on the track below. You can resize the footage to properly fit the mask and even use 3d track motion if it needs to be angled to better match the TV angle.
