Picture in Picture
Posted by Todd Johnson on May 12, 2008 at 10:50 pmA scene i am editing has a tv in the background and I want to put either a picture on the tv or footage from the film I shot. How would I go about doing this?

May 13, 2008 at 12:45 pmIt would be best if the shot is locked down and the TV does not move. Then I’d use the masking in Pan/Crop to mask out the TV area and then put whatever footage I wanted on the TV on the track below. You can resize the footage to properly fit the mask and even use 3d track motion if it needs to be angled to better match the TV angle.

May 13, 2008 at 8:48 pmThanks for the response. Sorry, but i’m very new to this. Are there any tutorials on how to do this type of thing? I know how to open the pan/crop and then when i tried to mask the tv i masked out everything but the tv. Should I open a new video track before i do the pan / crop?

May 13, 2008 at 9:33 pmok, so i did the mask as white, and i masked the tv area but when i play the scene, right when it comes to the mask the screen flashes white for a second and then you see the mask. how can i make it not do the white flash? Also, how do i get the media that I want to appear on the white mask>?

Place video event with tv set on track one.
Open event pan/crop
Select mask
Use selection tool to outline the tv set.
Go to path-mode and change it to negative.
You should now have a cut out section (black) in the preview of the television set. Looks like TV is off
Place video that you want to show in the tv set on track two.
You will only see the portion of it that is under the cut out portion (masked) of track one.
You can then resize track two with event pan and crop to be slightly larger than the tv set.
Then with track motion move the resized video on track two to show under the mask (tv set) on track one.
As state elsewher this will work best if the tv set in track one is stationary (camera was locked down).Another way you could do this (but not as nice) without masks would be to place video event with the tv on track two. PLace the video that you want to show in tv on track one. Resize the video in track one to size of television set and move it over the position of the tv screen.

May 15, 2008 at 2:09 amOk, thanks a lot for all the help. I did everything you said and it worked great but i’m still having trouble getting the whole image from track 2 into the “tv” in track one. right now it’s just showing the middle portion of the scene.
